I really do wonder why insurers allow high profile, high value individuals to use them - especially prop aircraft. Biz Jets have the same sort of rate as normal commercial now, but smaller aircraft.....
No direct flight between Nantes and Cardiff so done for convenience.

Yes - of course, but why take the risk with a high value employee? In this case he was hardly going to be playing anytime quickly with no game for a week. TGV to Paris just over 2 hours, flight to London, chauffeur to Cardiff. Could be there inside a day with ease. Incidents like this just seem so avoidable.

Having been in a light aircraft for a sky dive I wouldn't be keen to get in one again. I was extremely relieved to jump out of the plane. The ascent was much more terrifying than the sky dive, which I enjoyed. Those little planes really do just feel like a sardine tin with a propeller stuck on the front. I agree with those who say perhaps the convenience isn't worth the risk, however it would be interesting to see the stats.

Fingers crossed for those on board, but I agree it doesn't look good.

If you are doing that you can fly easyjet from Nantes to Gatwick daily. Less than 90 minute flight and about 3 hours in the car. Leaving in the morning you are there early afternoon.

However when people have the money they don't see the doubling of the travel time as acceptable.

If reports are true that Emiliano Sala was being flown from Nantes to Cardiff on a Piper Malibu, serious questions neee to be asked of all parties involved. A single engine prop plane is not appropriate for that flight. Why wasn't a twin engine jet used?

In a statement Guernsey Police said: "Guernsey Coastguard received an alert at 20:23 from Jersey ATC, that a light aircraft had gone off their radar approximately 15 miles north of Guernsey, initiating a major search and rescue operation involving both St Peter Port and Alderney lifeboats. Air Search 1 and 2 HM Coastguard helicopters are also involved in the search.

"The PA 46 Malibu, a single turbine engine aircraft was on route from Nantes in France, to Cardiff in Wales, with two people on board when it was lost off radar as Jersey ATC was attempting to make contact.

"A search model was created on SARIS, based on the likely ditching position, and all search and rescue assets were tasked to the area.

"The search was terminated at 02:00, with all search and rescue assets being stood down, due to strengthening winds, worsening sea conditions and reducing visibility.

"At this time no trace of the missing aircraft had been found.

"The aircraft departed Nantes at 1915 for Cardiff. The aircraft was flying at 5000 feet. The aircraft on passing Guernsey requested descent. Jersey ATC lost contact whilst it was flying at 2300 feet.

"Air Search 1 and a French rescue helicopter based in Cherbourg, resumed the search of the area at 08:00."

Double the travel time or death. Tough choice.

You wouldn't catch me in a light aircraft/helicopter in a million years.

Agree - for all GG's comments about not wanting to take a minute longer and having the money etc etc there appears to be a major risk assessment failure here in terms of the mode of transport.

I've flown from Southampton to Aldernery (and back again) on a Piper PA-32 and felt safe the whole time. Although it did get bumpy at times.

I am with you on that. It also seems strange as mentioned above to choose such a small plane as well. Its closer to the sort of thing you would fly as an amateur pilot than charter for a £15m footballer. Is it possible he was flying it himself?

This is terrible. Guernsey Police said "on route" instead of "en route".
