Just googled it and I can't believe he got on. If Cardiff sent them to pick me up after an £18m transfer I'd tell them to go f*ck themselves. There are reasons why twin engines are safer....

Just been reading some depressing statistics on flying single engined planes and this is spot on.

I know didley squat about planes and maybe this is something out of the movies, but if a small plane like that was going down (and you knew it), could you not jump out (like parachuting) when you approach water? Not to say you would still survive, but surely it would give you half a chance.

I also know diddly squat about planes, but I'd imagine even if you did jump out, the English channel in January would finish you off pretty quick if you're not found sharpish.

Having fallen from that height, and going at the speed you would be there would be little difference between water and concrete. You would need a massive disturbance of the water to have any chance at all.

I have piloted single engine planes. They are not unsafe - you're still more likely to get killed in a car.

On the matter at hand, sad news - I hope not as bad as it appears.

McRae and Hill, were slightly different to the normal 'accident'

McRae was showing off and flying like he drove, accident entirely his fault

Hill decided to fly in weather it just wasn't safe to fly in, accident entirely of his own making

Remember what a belly flop felt like and the is from poolside, as height, add speed, not a pretty picture. More likely to survive staying in the aircraft and surviving impact and getting out but that too would be unlikely and then you have the cold water.

Harding was flying into power lines wasn't it (possibly in bad weather), so could be argued an accident of the pilots making too.

Is driving a car that safe?

I don't have any figures but would imagine flying is safer than driving. As Papa Soare can probably confirm

Survival time for water that cold wouldn't be more than a few hours. Given the plane took off at 7.15pm there isn't much hope of anyone being rescued alive.

According to this page: To view the link you have to Register or Login

NTSB reported there were 1.21 fatalities per 100,000 flight hours for private aircraft (Part 91 operators).

NHTSA reported there were 1.26 fatalities per 100 million miles travelled by automobile.

We can equate that to about 2 million hours (estimating an average speed of 50mph). This gives us 0.063 fatalities per 100,000 driving hours.

Do they carry any kind of emergency equipment like an inflatable raft?

You maybe less likely to have an accident whilst flying, but if you do the consequences are far greater
