And the opposite one to that when players go down with about a minute of the game left and their team leading 1-0 to then be treated on the pitch for an hour and kill any flow that was in the game.Rinse and repeat until the ref has had enough and blows for full time anyway.Any game now where a team is leading with a few minutes to go just descends into an absolute farce.

I thought that too. Sometimes players are taken off because they've lost their head or something. Often that means the crowd is riled too.

That rule will change once an opposition player gets lynched in somewhere like Albania.

This rule change is to stop goalkeepers moving the post or crossbar as a penalty kick is taken to distract the taker. Keepers can still kick mud off their boots before they get ready without being in contact with the post or crossbar. Also to clarify the clubs website explanation of the rule changes keepers can still move along the goal line prior to the kick and will be allowed to take one step forward but must have at least one foot either on the goal-line or in the same plane as the goal-line if jumping in the air.

This was changed about 3 years ago.

If the offending player is cautioned then the player fouled can receive treatment and remain on the pitch.

  • a player being substituted will have to leave the field of play at the nearest boundary line,
  • the goalkeeper only is required to have one foot on the line at a penalty kick.
  • When there is a ‘wall’ of three or more defenders, the attackers are not allowed within 1m (1 yd) of the wall; an attacker less than 1m (1yd) from the ‘wall’ when the kick is taken will be penalised with an indirect free kick
  • When the defending team takes a free kick in their own penalty area, the ball is in play once the kick is taken; it does not have to leave the penalty area before it can be played
  • If play is stopped inside the penalty area, the ball will be dropped for the goalkeeper
  • If play is stopped outside the penalty area, the ball will be dropped for one player of the team that last touched the ball at the point of the last touch
  • If the ball touches the referee (or another match official) and goes into the goal, team possession changes or a promising attack starts, a dropped ball is awarded
  • With goal kicks: the ball is in play once the kick is taken; it can be played before leaving the penalty area
  • If the referee is about to issue a YC/RC but the non-offending team takes the free kick quickly and creates a goal-scoring opportunity, the referee can delay the YC/RC until the next stoppage if the offending team was not distracted by the referee
  • A team official guilty of misconduct will be shown a YC (caution) or RC (sending-off); if the offender cannot be identified, the senior coach who is in the technical area at the time will receive the YC/RC
will be very interesting to see how this affects how teams set up to build from the back and how they will be pressed. Basically, City v Liverpool next season will be even more interesting

Blimey! Talk about over complicating things!

Football used to be a simple game, from jumpers for goal post down the park to a World Cup Final... what are they doing???

Yeah that's what I don't like either, the beauty of the game is its simplicity. Having said that I'm ok with most of the changes except the handball penalty thing, we're going to see a load more pens, more appeals and more disruption to the game. Start practising shooting at waist height.

They ****ed the handball rule up when it stopped being a basic case of whether the offender gained advantage or not - intent merely determined the level of punishment

That never happens, every injured player still goes off even if a caution given. Was happening last year.

The referee can allow them to head to a place of safety so it is dealt with in the laws.

What it stops is the player right in the corner being taken off, turning to applaud the fans, shaking everyones hand as they head off and taking 2 minutes to leave the pitch.

If you run straight for the dugout there should not be an issue.

Agree that many senior refs do not apply the law properly but the actual law now does allow a fouled player to remain on the pitch if the offender is cautioned. A problem may occur if the injury is more serious as a physio is only technically only allowed to enter the field of play to assess any injury and perform any minor treatment and the player should leave for further treatment if possible.

New rules 2019/20 season

From the Prem League:

The International Football Association Board (IFAB) has updated the Laws of the Game, and we are examining what has changed.

Kick-offs

Winning the coin toss before the start of a match previously meant choosing which goal to attack.

But from the start of the 2019/20 Premier League season, captains will have the option of taking the kick-off instead, offering an interesting dilemma for the respective skippers.

Dropped balls

Contested dropped balls are a thing of the past.

Last season an unlimited number of players, including goalkeepers, could battle for a dropped ball.

But that is no longer the case.

In 2019/20, if play is stopped outside the penalty area and a dropped ball is required, it will be dropped for a player from the team that last touched it.

Last touch

The referee will release the ball wherever the last touch happened, and all other players from both sides must be at least four metres away.

If play is stopped inside the penalty area, the ball will be dropped for the goalkeeper.

This new procedure will stop aggressive confrontations around dropped balls.

It will also halt instances where a player purporting to be sportingly kicking the ball back to his opponents seeks to gain an unfair advantage by putting it out for a throw-in deep inside their half.

If the ball touches the referee or another match official and goes into the goal, or results in a change of possession or a promising attack, a dropped ball will be awarded.

Substitutions

In order to minimise the potential for time-wasting, any player being substituted must leave the pitch at the nearest point on the touchline or goalline.

The only exception will be if the referee indicates that the player can leave quickly at the halfway line or a different point because of a safety or security issue, or due to injury.

Once substituted, the player must go to either the technical area or dressing room to avoid problems with substitutes, spectators or the match officials.

If they are thought to have infringed the spirit of this law and delayed the restart of play, they will be sanctioned for unsporting behaviour.

Free-kicks

Goalkeepers facing free-kicks will no longer have to deal with intruders in their defensive wall.

In previous seasons, players from the attacking team might have tried to stand among their opponents to create holes in the wall or block the 'keeper's view.

This has often caused management problems for the referee and wasted time, while it is also against the spirit of the game.

From now on, when there is a wall of three or more defenders, the attacking players will not be allowed within a yard of it.

If one is caught standing within that area when the free-kick is taken, the referee will award an indirect free-kick against them.

Playing out from the back

Goalkeepers will also now be able to play shorter goal-kicks and free-kicks inside their penalty area.

The ball will no longer need to leave the box before it can be played.

Experiments have shown that this produces a faster and more constructive restart.

It has also stopped the tactic of time-wasting whereby a defender deliberately plays the ball before it leaves the penalty area, knowing there will be no punishment and the goal-kick will simply be retaken.

Opponents must still remain outside the box and at least 9.15m away until the ball is in play.

Delaying a card

Teams on the attack will now be given a better chance of maintaining their momentum and finding the net following a foul.

If the referee is about to show a yellow or red card but a quick free-kick is taken and creates a goalscoring opportunity, the referee can delay the card until the next stoppage.

However, if the offending team has been distracted by the referee starting the procedure of issuing the card, the quick free-kick will not be allowed.

For an offence that denies an obvious goal-scoring opportunity, the player will be cautioned rather than sent off because the attack was restarted.

This last one could cause a few arguments. So should a team take a quick free kick to hopefully score or not do so to get the player sent off?

In the next episode ... new rules about hand ball...

Surely with the new drop ball rule the ref wont actually bother to drop the ball but will be a conventional free kick?
