He seems a bright lad, he should do his badges and look to develop a coaching career. Just looks like one of those cases where the talent and brain is there, but sadly the body isn't built for the modern professional game. He'll risk doing lasting damage to his future well-being if he's not careful.

Wouldn't be surprised if he ended up at Swansea.
Fits into their model.

Whatever happens I wish him well, very well. Smashing lad, supremely talented, desperately unlucky.

On Charlton Life there is a post on there from a guy who said he was playing golf with Julian Speroni a few weeks back, and Jules said Williams is the kind of player that needs his friends around him. The loan in Sunderland was very tough on him mentally. Said he was one of the best players technically at Palace but his injury issues, as we know forced him out.
So.... Jules to Charlton then! |

He'd be far better off staying at Charlton.

This is what Bowyer said on JW's contract. Same goes for a lot of players that get released by us and other PL clubs, I think.
“We know what we have per player. Jonny came from a Premier League club who were paying most of his wage and we were paying a small percentage of that. For us to get close to what he was on before is just impossible. “We explained the situation to Jonny. He’s going to have other clubs that are interested in him for sure. If the money isn’t what he’s looking for, or if there is any way we can get close to it, then we will be speaking to his agent, we will be keeping in contact. It’s not like we’ve shut the door on him, it’s half open, hoping that someone else doesn’t come and snap him up.”

Would be a good signing for a Championship club and Swansea sounds like the right fit. |

Not sure why Palace would have been paying his wages? He was not on loan from Palace, but on a 6 month contract with Charlton.

We might have paid off most of his contract and then he could sign for small wages at Charlton for 6 months.

So can we all go back to despising Charlton without reservations now?

I don't believe Williams is dross, but exceptionaly unlucky with injuries.

They should also be grateful for giving them accommodation whilst they couldn't use their ground too.

He was under contract at Palace so i assume we basically paid him off, whether it was weekly or a one time payment. He was probably on 15-20k a week at Palace, whereas Charlton would be paying a tenth of that.

It would be a very strange decision by Charlton, having gained promotion to the championship and one player very instrumental in getting them there from all accounts was Jonny Williams to then not make every effort to retain him sums them up and why they have had their past troubles in the running of the club.
They have a good passionate manager who has the club at heart, also several players that they have developed to become highly rated and wanted. If they are to be reborn again as a club and re-establish a long term future in the championship, then they need to take a long hard look at what their approach should be if they are NOT to go back down that track agai. As surely they have already learnt the hard way from previous painful experiences, and keeping good players like Jonny Williams is a way to achieve that goal. |

They cannot afford him, how difficult is that to understand?
