Crystal Palace Ladies FC change their name
They have changed their name from Crystal Palace Ladies, to Crystal Palace. To follow the trend of dropping ‘ladies’ from other woman’s football teams.
Firstly what is wrong with having ‘ladies’ as part of the name, and what does it hope to achieve? Won’t it get confusing on Teletext if Crystal Palace beat Barcelona 7-1? Every team has a different name such as Crystal Palace U23s. Im not against it, I just really wonder what the perceived issue is with being called ‘Ladies’, to me they were part of the Crystal Palace family anyway seeing as they have the name and colours. I find the bbc really annoying when it covers the womens game on the bbc sport site with just Man city beat chelsea headline. PC gone mad
no one is interested surely.

The Guardian is the same, no problem with anyone playing football but headlines for matches that attract non-league size crowds is a bit forced. And yet, in their results listing for the women's world cup, they suffix every countries team with "women".

The really progressive decision would have been to rename the men's team Crystal Palace Gentlemen.

Why is this thread in World of Football?
As the official release makes clear, the women's team are part of one club, one family - Crystal Palace FC.

It still doesn’t make me think any more/less of them being part of Crystal Palace FC. Is anyone offended by the term ‘ladies’? I don’t think it’s holding back Woman’s football in anyway. |

Do you have a problem with the U15 and U18 teams being named Crystal Palace FC?

Why don't you start a campaign to get their kit corrected then. How dare they wear Crystal Palace FC badges.

I have no issue, I’m just intrigued what the thinking is in dropping ‘Ladies’, it’s a fair question. |

A number of players across many clubs were in favour of dropping 'ladies'. Hardly a big issue I imagine, more a tidying up of a rather old fashioned term - just as clubs dropped 'gentlemen' a long time ago. I believe most have or changing the team's names, though a number seem to be just swapping 'ladies' for women'.

Perhaps if you'd read the article that I linked to which explains the reasoning behind the name change, you would understand the point that I was making.

Why does it make them seem closer to club when they already had the name and the same strip. Seems you are well up for the change, whats better about it honestly? |

I'm not too fussed either way. But a couple of things strike me:

That’s the first Ive heard of ‘Ladies’ been a dated and condescending term that represents the ‘patriarchy’. Have anyone uttered what you then suggest a hypothetic bigot might say? Fair enough if it has that connotation to people, it just doesnt to me. Doncaster Belles is it? I think that’s a great name it's individual and reflects femininity in the club, Im not saying clubs need this but what wrong with having abit of femininity in the name? I think I get it now. It’s a branding concept. It’s being branded ‘woman’s football’ so that is now the term. I still think there is nothing wrong with having abit of identity of ‘Ladies’.
