Under 21 European Championships
I see to have more interest in this than full International football right now. Italy ended up handing out a bit of a beating, perhaps surprisingly to Spain last night in a 3-1 victory. I must say though that the Italy team is very very strong indeed , with quite a few in there who have already played for the full National team. Poland also beat Belgium yesterday 3-2.
Groups: A: Italy Spain Belgium Poland B: Germany Denmark Serbia Austria C: England France Romania Croatia Slightly odd 3 group tournament like the Women's World Cup, two best third placed teams make the Quarter Finals.

The BBC fixtures page suggests the group winners and best 2nd placed side progress to semi finals. |

A draw tomorrow night might not be a bad result against France.

Were some good games yesterday. Italy look pretty decent, but Poland winning came as a bit of a surprise. They were dreadful to start.
Looking at the line-up Spain and Italy both had a lot of regular main squad internationals. Not the same for England. We definitely shouldn't be favourites. |

Does make it a cut throat tournament where 1 weaker team in a group makes a big difference.

If they draw (and assuming they win the other games) then Spain cannot finish better than them. Germany have arguably the easier group and should progress. I reckon if France and England both finish on 7 points then both will go through. Might make the game more cagey as it will be a must not lose game rather than both teams going for it. |

I stand corrected. Even weirder than I first thought then.

It was always 8 teams (well, in recent ish times) and only went to 12 the last one? I can only imagine it will expand to 16, the problem being, that then means quarters etc and a longer tournament. Which the FAs don't want. I recall the last one, all the second placed teams finished on the same points. Theoretically, it isn't difficult to imagine for the 4th spot, same points, same GD, same goals scored - thus a play off!

I don't know if anyone knows the answer, but why is there a World Cup at every age group up until U20s, but as far as I am aware there isn't one for the U21s, just these European Championships?

Not sure. The U23s play at the Olympics, perhaps that is part of it. (The Euro U21 qualifiers used to determine who goes to that, perhaps still does).

It does. There's potential for an additional 'Olympic play off' fixture, if England progress.

Our very own James Tomkins is of course a "Great Britain" International as a result.

It’s different for the other athletes who probably give themselves time off to recover after each Olympics. |

Yet all the other nations in the World enter the Olympics.

Got Serbia v Austria on TV that just kicked off.
Interested to see Luka Jovic (who just left Eintracht Frankfurt for Real Madrid) scored 27 goals last season. To view the link you have to Register or Login |
