Escalating Transfer fees

I just read on BBC football that Leeds have put a £30m valuation on Kalvin Phillips, for a Championship midfielder. It’s becoming sickening the money involved, only 20 year ago that would have bought you the best player in the world twice or 10 years ago Ronaldinho. It’s starts to lose any attachment to reality and just feels quite grotesque. Breaking the £100m ceiling has somehow created a trickle of inflation to other leagues. It shows no sign of stopping either. People bang on about signing players from lower leagues or abroad but really £10m wont buy you much anymore.

I don’t really have anymore to say other than it just makes me like football less.

Anyone left still thinking £45M was a lot for AWB?

No one else will value Klavin at £30m, even if they have heard of him

If the money was more evenly spread through the levels then maybe they wouldn’t need to inflate fees. I can understand to a degree - they put in a lot to develop players and then players get plucked away from their club, just as they start to really produce, and into the premiership. They see all the money in the top level and not really distributed at a time when a lot of clubs are struggling to stay afloat so if they can get fees of this magnitude they are going to try, ably assisted and encouraged by agents. There has to be a reckoning at some point because it is only sustainable for the top 6 clubs or those with owners with bottomless pockets. I really hate the way the game has gone commercially, it’s not about the game anymore, it’s more about the owners

We'll Leicester turned down 70million so they won't be far off 90 if they decide to sell.

Bit like the over inflated property markets in most capital cities around the world. Everyone thinks their place is more than what it's worth and every so often you will get a mug who agrees and pays it. So it goes with football IMHO.

The problem isn't the valuations put on players, it's the money teams are willing to spend on players. Just looking at Aston Villa, they bought Tyrone Mings for £20m up front. Who the **** would negotiate towards a fee of £20m for Tyrone Mings? What did Bournemouth start at? They also paid £22m for striker Wesley Moraes, who comes over from Belgium having scored 38 goals in 138 matches. In Belgium. I don't know, maybe it works out for them.

Considering it was 50% more than Bayern spent on Pavard, yes. Yes I do.

Tyrone Mings moves for £25m. Top Championship players are now worth £10-20m.

Anyhue here are the summer transfers.

Why you go down the list, yeah there is a lot of cash being spent, but Aston Villa seem to have got the least bang for their buck, certainly. Although £30m on the player that used to be Mads Hummels is very steep

Now?

It’s been that way for a while.

Last summer how much did Leicester pay Norwich for Maddison. More than £20m.

How much did Burnley pay Leeds for Chris Woods two summers ago?

Main thing probably is that international deal no longer shared equally. You are only better off if you finish in top 10..

Sounds like Villa have had their pants taken down on both deals.

The TV deals will gradually favour the bigger clubs. Us smaller clubs need to be careful as we'll gradually get less, it's probably partly why the Americans want out.

I think the reckoning has already happened for us, just look at our spending in the last year or so. We i.e. the owners got carried away with the spending a few years ago and are now struggling with the resultant cost of those deals and wages.

The AWB deal may have sorted that out but the structure can't stay the same.

The UK TV deals currently favour the smaller clubs. The smaller clubs couldn’t remotely command what they get at the moment if their negotiated their own deals independently.

And yes the smaller clubs will get a smaller share going forward, we saw that with the last international tv rights deal.

Not just fees. Imagine the wages. I’ve heard what Jadon Sancho is on in Germany, made my stomach turn.
