UK Footballer To Come Out?

I don't know if many of you has seen this, but there is this “anonymous” twitter account claiming to be an U23 player for a Championship club, and they want to be the first footballer since Justin Fashanu to come out publicly. Obviously there is a lot of support for whoever is behind this twitter account, but at the same time there is a lot of suspicion that it is not genuine and it is some sort of troll account. I think a lot of people are suspect of the twitter account username.

If it is a genuine account and someone does come out, i think it would be a great step forward. I just hope there isn’t some sort of sicko behind it using it as some sort of vehicle to troll people. What do people think?

Yes i care.

That the sport we love has so far encouraged, not necessarily by action and more by inaction, a complete lack of confidence for a significant minority of players to be proud of who they are and hide it is shocking.

We have heard for years that players have been thinking of doing this, and rumours they have even been discouraged.

Its about time and whoever does it should feel the support of fans up and down the country and other players should be given the confidence to follow suit.

They've certainly been drumming up a lot of publicity for their announcement if they are real. It can only be a matter of time anyway, surely

I agree with GG that in this day and age where we have popular events like Pride etc, it is shocking that there still aren't any out gay footballers. We live in 2019 not 1519.

Unfortunately you know when it does happen there will be some ****wits who will take it too far at games though.

Compared to the women's game its very odd. Nobody cares that half the England team are partners, and room together, which must be a complete curve ball for Phil N to deal with. They're protected from it.

The Men seem fair game though.

Just do it then, why say oh I am goung to come out but not fora few weeks and cue a drum roll!

The more they make a fuss of it the more a lot of people will see it as something unusual when really the whole point should be that it's not. I know it is unusual for a footballer to come out but the more you act like it is and give it that focus the more likely some are going to act like it is something beyond the norm.

That is why I don't think it is real.

I remember the Selhurst game v Wombles and the stick John Fashanu took after his brother "came out" just previously. To be fair he seemed to take it in good part but must have been seething.

It is something beyond the norm. No active footballer in England has ever come out of the closet before.
It does matter because of hideous shits making normal the steady creep of prejudice (against homosexuals, women and people who simply aren't white). It is beginning to become commonplace; it needs to be confronted; make as much fuss as possible about it to force the debate.

That was the sentiment I was going for. I don't think they would get as much hassle as people make out (they would still get some...)

Indeed and racism is the unacceptable exception at games in this country now. Yes it still happens but it is highlighted and dealt with, homophobia will follow suit IMO and Palace probably have the biggest issue. With the Brighton rivalry, whilst i do not believe we have a higher number of homophobic fans, some of the songs aimed at Brighton to wind them up would have to disappear.

Indeed, if David Beckham called a press conference everyone will turn up.

A Championship U23 player still trying to break into the first team - who would show for a random press conference? Why would it make the papers?

Perhaps you haven't heard some of our own fans and their homophobic bile when we play Brighton? There is sadly zero chance of avoiding such abuse all over the country.

To be honest I'd say it's fake. Written in a way to almost encourage people to do it on the back of the reassuring words.

Seems this "footballer coming out" thing always comes up in the month before the season. Clearly there must be loads of homsexual footballers out there just like in any walk of life and industry. It's sad that it's a thing and anyone who thinks a small minority wouldn't abuse them is sadly wrong. I just hope it's enough the norm now that the masses shut them up and it becomes a non issue.

There were rumours that a player in the Greek Super League was married to a woman & had a kid. Thankfully it turned out to be false.
