The Mountain Bike thread

So, i figured seeing as the other cycling thread is full of lycra monkeys who shake every time they see a corner i'd start an MTB thread.

So, what do you ride, where do you ride, are you 26" 650b or 29" Full sus or hardtail

Share all your MTB stories here

Trek 6500, from about 1995. Bought it off ebay for 37 quid, have changed most things on it now and it is a really nice ride. Hard tail.

Use it with my boy mainly.

Not a patch on a road bike though

It doesnt look like there are many mountain bikers on here.

Ive got my heart set on a new Giant (funny that) Trance 27.5 (650b) when they come out, but all my money has just gone on the lycra monkey bike so its probably a while away yet

Was checking out some bikes from our rental fleet up in Whistler the other day.

We have something like 150 Giants (can't remember the model number) custom-built, each costing around $8000. I know next to nothing about mountain bikes but the suspension on these ones was fantastic. Also have road bikes that are about $11,000 each!
Customers usually go mad with joy when they see them.

And it's the Crankworx festival in a week's time.
If you love biking and ever get the chance to come over, Whistler's bike park is supposedly among the best in the world! Unfortunately I can't try it as my insurance doesn't cover mountain biking

Best thing to do is just find a wooded area And go for a ride around the bridal or foot paths. Just be sensible as we're not supposed to cycle on foot paths. Get used to riding on a variety of terrain.

One of things I miss most about home! Canada is much better than America when it comes to health insurance but everyone on a work visa here has to buy extra insurance on top.

We (I work for Whistler Blackcomb) change the bikes every year, sell the whole fleet and get a whole new one in. The one I was looking at the other day had suspension bouncier than a space-hopper!
Have you been over to Whistler before then?

And I would love to say feck the insurance, but if I got injured at our own bike park and had to miss work, knowing that I didn't have insurance to cover it, I would almost certainly get fired...

Bump

In the market for a Mountain Bike. Need to be more active now I've got a kid and the weight has crept up. Have a road bike but it's too much of a risk IMO, plus off road seems a lot of fun.

Don't have a huge budget at all. Only about 500. Looking around and there are models for thousands and thousands. Then I saw a review of a hardtail for about 600, which I could push to, especially if I can get the road bike working and sell it for a couple of hundred. Reviews mentioning great geometry, great components, great to ride. Brilliant, I thought. Then I realised where it's sold. Halfords.

Dare I do this? Horror story upon horror story about bikes from Halfords being put together badly. But seriously, this bike is apparently incredible for the money. Could I do this to good old Spunky, and give my money (which I don't have- god bless credit cards) to Halfords rather than a lovely independent bike shop?
