Of course they won't sack him. If deemed necessary by the club a personal apology will suit.

And if he scores goals to keep them up, the owners may even spring for some 'jap' to give him a sexy happy ending massage ...

In his defence here he does only call the guy a jap.. isn't that the same as calling us a brit in their country? Not really that demeaning imho

Unlike in England, in the U.S, when you play pool it is regarded as bad sportsmanship to try and snooker an opponent. The derogatory term for this is 'Japping.' It was explained to me that to Jap someone was dirty and sneaky, just like the attack on Pearl Harbor. Then again, I doubt very much if Vardy even knows where Pearl Harbour is.

My view is that words are not inherently offensive. Getting hung up about the actual words used misses the point. The offense is in the intent of the speaker and the understanding of the listener.
Vardy seems to be an offensive ****.

He was therefore unable to fulfil his contract to play for them, and they argued they had wasted a transfer fee and salary on him. Vardy, despite coming across as an odious piece of work, is still able to play. Two v different cases. |

Jap is more racial than Brit. An Australian will seldom be called the latter but a Chinese, Korean, Thai ect who sends a lot of time living in the west will hear the former from time to time.

English people may think terms like **** are worse, but that's just because the UK has more of a history of immigration from South Asia, and more discrimination and violence against people from there. America on the other hand had a lot of immigration from Japan and there is more history of discrimination against Japanese, notably around the time of forced interment of Japanese-Americans on the east coast (yes, they were rounded up and put into camps, even if they were third generation). It's hard to argue that it wasn't being used as a racial slur at the time: Quote:
If large proportions of the British diaspora have suffered similar discrimination and find the term "Brit" equally offensive, then I'd be interested to hear about that. |

Not at all, **** is racist, never suggested it wasn't! My point was that too many people get offended on someone else's behalf these days.... And should we be offended if someone refers to us as Brits or Scots (as happens a lot in the media) as its just an abbreviation, not a racist slur.

The term **** comes from the press derogatory use in the 1960's once immigration from Asia began from there. |

They will find enough 'differences' to justify sacking the previous 3 but not Vardy. All the noise at the time was that they had to come down hard of racism with foreign owners and trying to open up foreign markets. Usually goals and points count for more than moral values though.
