Sorry what they think is offensive isn't the only factor when deciding whether it's all that outrageous. You can make your own mind up about levels of wrong as well. Assuming we accept being nasty like that isn't ideal and doesn't make the person look that nice a person.

There are huge differences between derogatory words for a person from a country when used in Britain.

If the word is aimed at a someone from a country that we colonised and then treated like crap because people didn't like it when some of them decided to move to Britain for a better life. Then I have far more issues with it than a word that is used for a person from a country that decided to jump in bed with Hitler and generally treated our people like animals. The words just have totally different connotations. Yes they might both be nasty and unkind but i know which one i would judge someone for using more (see also Kraut and wop). One is all about oppression and discrimination and the other just stems from a gripe between nations.

The fact he didn't know he was from japan and therefore might well not have been does make it slightly worse. However it still doesn't elevate my view of him beyond being a nasty arrogant tit.

A bit like Gweilo it's not nice to have such a term but it's hardly something we are mortally offended by. I imagine that or say farang used in an aggressive situation like this isn't all that nice but they are hardly words that would get people the sack. They just don't have the same history as other words i would think of as properly racist labels.

Ok , ask yourself the question, will the person who I am using the term find it offensive, if there is doubt even a small bit just dont use the term. Using the three terms you suggest and going around saying Oi Brit or Oi Aussie (I am not using Scot because someone is bound to be called Scott on here) would people find it offensive in the context of the incident being discussed ? As stated on here a few times it is deemed offensive by the Japanese themselves end of discussion.
Just to confuse it further was the use of say Brits Out in Ireland using the term as a term of friendship ?

I agree if it's offensive on any level then it's not great to use it. However he wanted to be aggressive presumably, so he has already decided he wants to be nasty. So whilst it's offensive i honestly wouldn't see it as much more outrageous than saying "oi big nose" or "oi fatty". I'd certainly put it closer to them than "oi ****" which i would think is genuinely outrageous and sackable.

I thought the same. In fact I know one Japanese person who regularly refers to himself as a 'Jap'. Personally I wouldn't have necessarily even considered it being racist and thought it was all being blow out of context.

However....after watching the video and the context of how its being said its certainly said in a derogatory/racist manner. And would expect him to be punished retrospectively.

Couldn't agree more. Why couldn't Vardy just tell him to **** off and leave him at that. By labelling him a Jap it was aimed to degrade him and the bloke was rightly very upset. There is very little difference between what Vardy said and what the three youth team players said as far as I'm concerned but they won't sack him because he's an important player for them which makes Leicester looks stupid.

Wasn't it that the three youth players were sacked for making derogatory/racist comments to Asian women while participating in a spot of sex tourism?

I expect the three players sacked will be seeking compensation now for unfair dismissal.

I suspect that the man of asian origin was only offended because he's recently been told that he should be.

I'm looking forward to a nice rant the next time Johnny foreigner calls me a Brit.

Only the other day I was talking with friends about Hackney Marsh football, how open and rough the place appeared and how there were some teams I wouldn't fancy playing citing a 'team of bloody great black blokes', the meaning clearly referring to their physical presence, and the black friend interjected with "steady, where are you goong with yhis". It annoyed me that I had to explain. When he got it he went on to tell me about a 'team of Turks"......naturally I interjected with "steady, where are you going with this....."

Truth is, it's all become rather pathetic.

Why? Every case has to be treated on it's individual merits/demerits. The facts were very different in their case I believe and the subsequent decisions of Leicester in another situation are unlikely to be relevant. An employee has 3 months from the dismissal date to appeal to an Employment Tribunal in cases of unfair dismissal - not sure if they are out of time ?

Plenty of rappers etc call themselves N***** , but does that mean it's not racist or other Black people don't find it racist ?

So are we going to start taking offence at people referring to the Scottish as 'Scots' or the British as 'Brits' or even Australians as 'Aussies'? all these seem to be accepted and not considered racist in the slightest.

Another ridiculous example of the PC Brigade making something out of nothing.

I expect that it's fair but you have to wonder if it was a younger player in their youth team, would of they of got rid like those other players last season. Of course their actions were much worse but where fo you draw a line on previous precedents that are set?
