Scum, but no doubt the orders come from 'higher up'.
They are probably paid until the end of their shift - maybe final whistle + 30 mins.

It's not the cinema.
You must be one of them members of the prawn sandwich section at Wembley...

Back to the original post... Is the problem that the bar staff should not have been still selling beer at 12:22 knowing that people would be getting kicked out 8 minutes later, or that people were getting kicked out at 12:30?

I would think it was the former (maybe a 12:15 cut off). Then I'm sure people would complain at that also.

This all reminds me of the old saying about ice hockey.... they went to watch a fight and a hockey game broke out!

Out of interest why does a bar close during a game? If people want to stay in there and have a drink after the game starts surely that is increased income. Is there some regulation that does not permit it to stay open?

The bars on the concourse don't. Popped out many a time in past few seasons for a quick beer when the football was so shit it was a pleasant relief.

Precisely!

I remember back in the glory days of 606 (yeah, yeah, Danny Baker's Millwall, but there's no denying the man knows how to offer a decent football phone-in) one caller told of how during a lengthy particularly awful spell for his team, he and his group would play cards on the terraces, often without a clue or care as to what was happening on the pitch (safe in the knowledge that whatever it was, was sure to be much less fun than their card game.)

Pointless, stupid, resented payment for attendance they nonetheless felt obliged and compelled to suffer, but making the best of it by doing something else at least vaguely enjoyable with their time in the moment. If that isn't what supporting a generally-bit-rubbish football team is all about, I haven't an idea what is.

As we're playing a hand, I'll see your (sick! You can get your kicks where you like though, I suppose...) "IwatgwGBbIEl" and raise you...

"Do you remember that spell in the Premier when we didn't score for 9 games? Oh, you do? Sucker. What were you thinking? That was when Bob made 7 straight when dealt Jack-high blind. And Tone had to eat his trousers as a result. Remember? Yeah you do - how we all laughed up our spleens. [Is eating trousers funny? I dunno. More astounding, I'd think. I'm typing in a hurry.] You remember. Oh, you were watching Chris hit the bar that time. When we were 3-down. Fair enough."

It's the spirit of the thing, man. The spirit. I'll fold my hand during Crystanbul. While Francis is managing, personally I'm going all-in blind. (Not actually. I've never played cards at the football. I can think of plenty of times when it would surely have been more fun though.)

(And, by the way, this is how we suffer the drudgery. Rather than sit at home and remember better times. Nobody's playing cards when Murray's FFSing. It's to see through the grimness. The 0-0s. And the 0-0s. And the 1-0s. And the 0-0s. And the (well, you get the idea, surely.))

Etc.

Now for a whinge about red and blue bar,

Having taking some time getting into the ground, we arrived just in time for a quick pint in Red and blue.
They were happy to sell us said pint at 12.22, at 12.30 we started being pressured by staff to leave the bar when I still had half the beer left. Security then came up (12.32 ish) to us and basically told us to get out.

My reply was very simply I was sold the pint at 12.22, I need time to finish it.

I was told, quite aggresively, I must go now. Naturally I refused and finished my pint, (took all of another 3 minutes) then left, during this time this security guy was right in front of me glaring.

I have not had that before in red and blue and did not appreciate it. Wont be back for a while, plenty of places I feel more comfortable drinking in than that.
I went in there - don't normally as I go to the Pawsons or the Victory but given the queues I thought I'd try it.

Over-priced, warm, shitty beer. Really hope I don't have to go there much more as it wasn't good.

Now this is tricky. While I wholly applaud your admirable commitment to the cause, I think you are willing to pay too high a price. 5 mins of film-beginning is a trump card, surely. (Someone once compellingly argued that you wouldn't start reading a book at page 10.) Even when you boast the royal flush of 20-mins-of-As-and-Ts-saved (yes you bloody well CAN trump a royal flush! You never played cards?? Get back to the football match, mate...)

This is surely too much. And unnecessarily so. There is a sweet spot and it's HUGE.

I have NEVER been to a film that has started proper within 20 mins of the screen-time. (Maybe 15. Not sure. It's been a while. Plus usually distracted by my cards. But 15 DEFINITELY. And I reckon 20.) So, give it 20 - as I always do - and you'll make the start but perhaps have to suffer 5 mins of adverts. This is tolerable. 20 - or 25 - however, is unconscionable.

Also (and, crucially)...

Who's gonna be the more fun to chat with? The guy who can assure you of the difference between the tibula and fibula (it's a joke - I KNOW they're both myth joints) or the fella who won't speak to me anyhow because he's too busy having fun playing cards with his mates rather than speak to me about some old injury or other?

I think his point was (more or less), if the bar is prepared to serve you at 12.22, then it would be reasonable for one to expect a reasonable amount of time to sup said pint. 8 minutes ain’t reasonable. Doable of course, but not reasonable. The very least they should have said was ‘I can serve you but you need to be gone by KO’. You at least then have the choice to buy and sup up or not bother.

That was indeed his point, I believe.

Tomo's point, however, was "If I wanted a drink enough to miss the start of the football. Id not make said drink in the red n blue bar."

Tough to fault his thinking.
