It's good that county cricket is still competitive and that the test match counties can still not necessarily beat the rest all the time.

Except it wasn't county stuff. The giggle game and one dayer still bring out the crowds. The league format; dying unfortunately.

With the shit run rate of Surrey even if they win their last 2 games I can't see it being enough.
'Out of the woodwork'

Still have the two schoolboy matches next month.

Looking good to take up our rightful place back in Division 1 having been shafted a couple of seasons ago.

Although, looking at the South table, 2 wins from the last two games for yourselves and Kent, you'll need defeats for Somerset against Hampshire and Gloucestershire against Middlesex to finish 3rd!!

But then we always get smashed at Essex so it's a bit of a long shot.

To say there is something not quite right at Surrey is an understatement, and the rout against Kent summed it up perfectly. We seem to take One foot forward and Two backwards, so is it more to do with poor management and coaching being mainly responsible? the team must show more consistency.
Yes there is a valid arguement that we have a very exciting young team coming through which will take time, but we also have a group of very experienced players aswell who need to lead by example much more, and this is where Alec Stewart along with De Veneto and coaches need to stand up and be counted. Why did we allow that excellent and proven leader Gillespe slip through the net and join a far lesser County when he became available? that was a massive error.
There is so much talent at Surrey's disposal yet constantly underperform, WHY?

Disappointed I could not go yesterday but was happy when I saw the result.

It would be good to get through, even better coming first and going straight to the semi final. It will go down to Wednesday.

Because, simply mediocrity is not only tolerated at The Oval, it is season upon season of just a metaphorical shrug of the shoulder. Who cares? Surrey are a rich club with the guarantee of test cricket with its rip off prices. T20 packs out the place and being a short game has less disruption in the English Summer with far less risk for public refunds.

Now the latest ECB proposed changes recommend 100 ball games played by 8 city based teams. Quite how the players and the public will maintain a grasp of the different leagues is to be seen. Perhaps yet even more 'clown uniforms' with branding and more lucrative income streams to fleece young families will help take minds off the increased admission prices.

The new format will compete with the current 50 over and T20 formats with the 4 day game consigned to rot. Why? Apparently because the modern public don't understand the complexities of Cricket and want quicker games with easily understood outcomes. Tests between England and Australia will continue because that profits both Cricket boards until eventually that too will go. All the power of influence now appears to lie with India and the turning away of public interest and the IPL ruling everything. The other test playing countries have already gone that way so it's unsurprising that England are now being unable to resist.

It's almost like the oft repeated warning that Sky and the Premier League excesses will eventually kill Football being realised in Cricket.

Then there is the Club v England aspect. County clubs develop young players for England first and so Sam Curran was unavailable to Surrey yesterday. Tom Curran is likely to go the same way and perhaps Foakes too.

I am a Surrey member and once the football season ends I look on going to The Oval as an antidote to the stress I have endured in supporting Palace, the true passion I have.

I cannot take supporting Surrey seriously. It's nice when they do well but really it's just a nice way to pass the time until August returns.

.
This. I love it when Surrey win & I'm really disappointed when they lose but the feelings are nothing compared to those I have after Palace games.

I understand where you are coming from "Rab" but also there is such a word as PRIDE and Ambition that Surrey need to consider as very important for ALL connected to Surrey Cricket.
The simple fact is the trophy cabinet has been bare for far too long for a County like Surrey which should/is unacceptable, so responsibility must lay at the door of someone could that be "legendry" Alec Stewart? as the commander in chief, one thing is for sure it ain't working as it should.
Maybe i am being impatient and probably should wait until the end of the season to see how it pans out, sadly i have said this far too often over the past few years.

Foakes going well. Shame he's behind Barstow and Butler for England. Still Surrey's gain.

More Kent fans probably dislike Essex than anyone else. However, I can barely remember ever beating them!

Well done Kent. Picking up nicely now after a slow start to the season. I've never got used to this two division system. Let's go back to the good old days of the 40 over John Player League when I could enjoy watching Asif and John Shepherd.
