In that case we should have brought him in on a better deal.

Did well on a very small budget last summer.

As for the thread subject, Afolabi makes a lot of sense imho, as long as neither he nor we are expecting him to be a first team regular straight away. One of my concerns about our policy has been the way we so rarely seem to bring in genuine development prospects. For a club our size, bringing in players at relatively low cost who can develop into first teamers over a coupe of years is key to being able to succeed without constantly throwing the cheque book out.

As a long term prospect, this guy does seem to fit the bill, so I'd be very happy to see him come in, especially on a free. But if he does, it's important that we don't all write him off if (as is entirely probably) he isn't making a big impact in the first team by Christmas!

A quote something like that does ring a bell but I don't quite understand.

He checked him for our for a manager friend? As in he was scouting him for his friend but then he was keen based on someone else's recommendation? So did he actually scout him himself or was he purely relying on someone else's opinion? And if so are we to believe it was the opinion of someone other than a Palace scout?

Afolabi was named in the under 19's Euro finals team of the tournament, along with 6 of the Spanish team who won it, 3 Portuguese players who were runners up, and 1 French player who lost to Spain in the other semi final.

We should definitely be interested in him especially on a free. I saw all 4 of Ireland's games in the Euro finals, and Afolabi was excellent in the first 3 games and very unlucky to miss out on the semi through suspension. Played up front on his own and was excellent at holding the ball up and a constant goal threat. He wasn't released by Southampton, he chose to leave through frustration at not being promised game time.

Lee O'Connor would be a good loan signing from the same Ireland under 19 side as a replacement for AWB at right back. He plays for Man United under 23's but his path will be blocked to the 1st team by Aaron.

So much for us being favourites to sign him he’s just signed a two year deal with Celtic , known the press/media we probably weren’t even in for him
