From my admittedly limited knowledge of rugby (internationals only, really and some of the rules still baffle me), this World Cup already has the makings of a bit of a roller-coaster for some. Hold On Tight.

they're probably still the best team around - but i dont think they're at the levels they have been in the past. sa, aus, eng, ire, wal and fra could all take them pretty close in a one-off game.

Boks were at their best in the first 20 - dominated possession but couldn't finish (though TBH, the ABs could've had a penalty try for the first pen.) Then when Pollard's pen hit the posts, the ABs went up two gears, smashed two tries and the Boks had no answer. Second half, it was pretty even but you still felt that the ABs had enough.

ALB proved he deserves to start ahead of SBW; I'm not 100% convinced by playing Barrett at fullback as he's so fantastic as first receiver off the breakdown (he often did that anyway which left me worried about cover in the event of a turnover); Ardie Savea is an absolute beast. FdK stood out for me from the Boks - really good decision making and executes everything at a high level.

Eddie Jones seems to be a meglomaniac control freak to me, an absolutist of the worst sort.

He can't take any criticism and will not only cut off his nose but pluck out his eyes to spite his face.

If he fails then the media backlash will go from ripple to Tsunami very quickly.

If he wins the World Cup he will be Sir Eddie

Went to the France Argentina game. Great day out - was initially hoping for a France win, but was screaming for the Pumas by the end. Both sets of fans in good form. Next game for me, England Argentina. Should be great.

Very cool. How's the World Cup being treated/received/perceived by the Japanese?

Here in Sapporo for the England v Tonga game, any other BBSers here? Went to the Oz v Fiji game yesterday wearing a Fiji T-shirt - great first half.

Lots of bemused and confused Japanese here in Sapporo. But very friendly as usual. I have to say the beer seving during and before the Oz v Fji game was a joke. Topk over 10 minutes to get served during the game. Also left one bar in Sapporo because it took so long to get seved.

I am sure it will be better in the bigger cities, but lots of thirsty poms and aussies wandering around Susukino last night

Went to the Yokohama fanzone yesterday and it was a bit smoother, only a few minutes to get served even at half time, crowd was 70/30 foreigners to Japanese and one thing I noticed was a large proportion of the staff/volunteers were westerners. Shit loads of Kiwis and Saffers there while the game was on so lots of people have come over without tickets but just want to make a holiday of it, fair play, rugby fans can be a little annoying but they spend so its good for the economy and much needed as the Koreans are in strop no 23453 and boycotting the country.

Today it took a while to get my lunch time pint as every pub was packed with Irish lads (proper ones not the BBS my great, great, great granny brigade) and an awful lot of men wearing skirts.

Even though it has a tad of a niche following (growing year by year tho) there's a strong history of the sport in Japan going back to the 20s when Anglo/Japan relations were high (went tits up a few yrs later). Baseball is the working class sport of choice (especially in the blue collar South) football is popular in the middle of the country where the major cities are and rugby appears to be a university thing most people forget about once they leave although that has gradually been changing.

Decent start by both teams and we are making some silly mistakes.

Brilliant defence by Tongo denying us the try
