I spend a long weekend in New Orleans and loved it but that was 20+ years ago now. Guess things will have changed. Remember getting hammered on a drink called Huricanes and still have the glasses on display from Pat O'Brians.. Enjoy.

Just be careful, in the evening stay off the side streets.
Take the trolley to where St Charles turn RIGHT (Carrollton), there several reasonable restaurants and an excellent bar, if you go here at night Do Not wander down any side streets.
IMHO I rank Commanders Palace as one of the top restaurants in NOLA (actually it is the Garden District), they have a very unique experience, you can eat in the kitchen at a table where you can watch them prepare the food, if you are lucky to get the table go there and back by taxi, every dish has their recommended wine and to finish it off you get a sample of every dessert they make
Enjoy the French Quarter at night, (watch out for your wallet) if you want to visit the House of Blues (Decatur), check on who is playing. The Howlin' Wolf on St Peters is worth at visit (it will be a late night). If you want real Orleans music go to the 'Spotted Cat'. If you are out late and want something to eat try 'Angeli on Decatur'.
I could go on, but please understand that these are just a few things to do and far from the best things to do, these are the place my wife and I go when visiting New Orleans, there are some outstanding restaurants, bars and clubs in the surrounding areas.

They have some fantastic mirobreweries in the French Quarter. And of course theres Bourbon Street. Do go on a walking tour and take in a cemetery (escorted - dont go on your own, the one where the Voodoo Queen is buried backs onto just about the worse crime getto in the USA all of 400 metres from the edge of the French Quarter) Dont let anyone engage you in conversation on the street and as PFIA above says - be really careful where you go, theres a reason the Police tend to park at all the entrances to the French quarter. If in doubt - get a taxi.

But the queues are long : you'll need to think about it (don't think you can book).

The Saints are playing the NE Pats while I am there, although according to the Saints website, they have been sold out since 2006. I figure I might just go an absorth some of the pre-match atmosphere and maybe pick a ticket up fom a tout if I get lucky.

The wife wants to do a cemetary tour, so it will be on the ajenda. And thanks for the safety tips, I will keep alert.

I've spent a lot of time in New Orleans over the last few years.

Take stroll along Magazine in the Garden District. Nice places to eat and a few decent bars. Lovely architecture and without the seediness of Bourbon Street. Feel a lot safer walking there in the evening even on the side streets.

There a place that sells the best gelato I've ever had on Magazine. If it's not too cold try the vanilla and make sure you get enough free samples. Good coffee and cakes too. To view the link you have to Register or Login On the other side of road is The Saki Cafe nice Japanese food and a bit further along is a nice pub, The Bulldog I think, amazing selection of beer, decent pub grub and open outside with heaters. Along a few doors is Reginelli's Pizza.

Heading into the business district towards the French Quarter is Ruths Chris if you like steak, pretty damn fine. To view the link you have to Register or Login . Do call ahead.

Another place to try is Drago's for seafood, the have one on the ground floor of the Hilton, avoid this it's very dissapointing and go to the original. To view the link you have to Register or Login

Dress warm, it'll be bloody freezing, where will you be staying?

Will be staing at the Staybridge Suites on Poydras St near the Centeral Buniess District. Do you know the area?

You're in a good location there close to the French Quarter, not far from Ruth's Chris in the CBD. If you want to go to Magazine you can hop on a cable car running along St Charles and get off somewhere around Louisana and walk across. It's nice stroll.

Saying all that The Garden district is my taste if I'm in NO for any amount of time as it's a lot less touristy and less in your face. For a short break you may want to look around close to where you're staying, not that it's far.

As it was pissing down with rain the day we were there, we spent a lot of time in the bloody huge closed in shopping center there. I think it was called Riverwalk or something.

Bog standard shopping center with average local fayre food court. I hope your wife doesn't drag you into it. (I was with 2 other guys and got stuck walking up and down the place!)

Is New Orleans any good? Is it safe? Will I see tits?

Thanks
