I hope the second sentence isn't your evidence for the first sentence?

He apparently spent nine days in Saudi Arabia, as many Muslims might given the fact that Mecca and so on are in that country. If we get to the stage where anybody who does anything bad within a few years of performing the Hajj is automatically assumed to have done that bad thing because they're a mega-terrorist jihadi, the evidence being having set foot in Saudi Arabia a little while ago, then there's a problem.

There are, of course, other reasons to suspect that it might have some kind of terrorist motivation. The exact details of his trip may well suggest something untoward or unusual, though not necessarily anything to do with terrorism, and other things reported thus far are somewhat consistent with that conclusion. It's there possible that your two sentences are unconnected. Just a statement, followed by a piece of information that isn't intended to justify that statement. We should be very clear on this.

Oh, indeed. Just pointing out that one gets billions of dollars in spend, countless bills and global headlines. The other costs 1000 times the number of lives and is defended as a way of life by American politicians. If they were serious about a war on terror to protect American lives they'd sort their own shit out first

There was someone pointing out all the politicians who'd come out with trite statements in the wake of these massacres and how much they'd accepted from the NRA in campaign contributions

Also, the reaction of some... zomg the muslamics! Err, better off keeping an eye on your neighbour

Out of curiosity, do terrorists have to have been to Saudi Arabia? Or was the bloke who shot up the abortion clinic a terrorist too? Think he was white and Christian so probably not

You've raised an issue that America is struggling with.

They have a succession of attacks like this and cannot reconcile home-grown madmen with radicalised islamic madmen.

The common denominator is the ease of acquisition of serious weaponry, which can be used for countless of these types of attacks.

Even now, there's a law being processed in Florida to permit the open bearing of guns.

Yep, wild west guns in holsters.

BBC News said that the US had already had well over 300 MASS shootings this year so far - that's 1 a DAY on average! Working on that, the figs must show thousands of people shot there every year. Gun regulation? Security? Er, don't think so. Too late!

I know there are other interpretations, but there's always that awkward moment at work when a news report comes in that a killing spree may have been committed by an aggrieved ex-employee. You can almost sense people nominating in their minds which of their colleagues are most likely to commit something similar. It's horrible.

The United States are in an awful pickle. It would seem that they can no longer allow muslims into the country if they are influenced by Shira law. It is not possible for the two to live together. The same goes for Britain. USA people will eventually take matters in their own hands because of all the weapons they own.

This SB case seems more bizarre by the minute.

It's as if they had big plans for something, and then something (or someone) pissed the guy off at work, and he said **** it... let's do it now.

Really getting a sense of almost disbelief from the US around this. I am convinced that the authorities had a bloody good idea that this was a terrorist attack within an hour or two (the name of the husband was being bandied around on twitter within that time frame) but were hoping that this was just the usual, run of the mill, nutter going postal.

For me it is the mundanity of the location. No national land-mark, no target of any real political or cultural significance. Just a part of the US that nobody had ever heard of before and an organisation that seemed to be the most innocous possible.

And two clean skins. Two people not even near the radar, let alone on it.

Which poses all sorts of unpalatable questions.

No it doesn't.

It's two mentally disturbed people who were inspired by ISIS.

It's not like they were trained in Syria.

Pure wishful thinking on your part. These people made a concerted effort to carry out a mass casulty attack. They planned, they conspired and they sort to cover their tracks. You may think them disturbed but they showed a level of meticolous preperation that belies any attempt to dismiss them as being mentally ill. They did so believing it was their religious duty to do so. I agree they were inspired by IS but so what if they were not trained in Syria ?

Indeed, the first of which should be, given 1000 times more Americans were killed by domestic gun violence then terrorists, what are they going to do about that?
