Saturday March 22nd 50 years ago.
At the Valley Charlton 1 - Palace 1 ( Roger Hoy ) Tense match neither side could afford to lose as it was so tight at the top of the table. While the draw was better for us as we still had games in hand. We did slip down to third, but we were in a good place and playing some good stuff, so much self belief did not look like losing. Crowd at the Valley that day just under 33000.

The Valley was a very different ground then. Huge capacity mostly standing back then

It was. And the only 'stand', half the length of and in the middle of the other the side, held a couple of thousand at most iirc.

Games still coming thick and fast
50 years ago today (26th March 1969) Palace 1 - Oxford Utd 1. Palace goal from Cliff Jackson Important point dropped and worse of all top striker Bobby Woodruff suffered an injury to his collar bone and was to be out for the rest of the season. If I recall correctly was the first time we had played Oxford in a home league game. They had only recently been voted into the football league (no promotion or relegation from the league in those days. Teams had to apply for re-election (bottom 4 of division 4) and non league teams could apply to join at their expense. Palace now faced a very busy (even busier) period as the Easter Weekend approached (10 days away) three games in 5 days, one a top of the table clash with Middlesbrough at Selhurst. The atmosphere amongst Palace fans was electric the first division at last was in touching distance....

Palace secure a 2-1 win at Carlisle Lazarus and an OG, gave us a rare win in the far north. We returned to 2nd place on goal average (as it was then) over Middlesbrough our next opponents at Selhurst on Good Friday April 4th. A busy Easter ahead two home games and a difficult trip to Huddersfield. With just 6 games left and an unbroken 10 game run without defeat since the season restart, dare we hope in August finally we would be in the big time!

Most of the next day's headlines were about the Oxford coaches getting smashed after the game. I believe they were parked behind the Old Stand, where it adjoins the Holmesdale.

Coming up home to Borough on 4th April and Portsmouth 5th April
Is this correct - 2 home games in 2 days? |

Against Oxford maybe, but not so much when the big boys came to town.

And so were the fans. I think we had close to 40,000 for the Middlesborugh game and over 30,000 for the Pompey game 24 hrs later.

A very hot sunny morning (11am ko) hardly a blade of grass on the pitch, a very bumpy dust bowl, no surprise it was a dull 0-0 draw terrible conditions and so much at stake, no surprise it finished 0-0.
