Point dropped to one of our main rivals, but we remained 2nd and with another home game only 24 hours later.

Yes it would have been good to win a 4 pointer but if we can beat Pompey at home today we'll be back on track!

Saturday April 5th 1969 only 26 hours after the final whistle blew on the Middlesborough game we were back at Selhurst for the Easter Saturday big match v Pompey and indeed it was the "Big Match" on ITV the next day.

Saturday was another warm spring day but unlike the weather the match did not sparkle, too much at stake, promotion nerves where on show.

Well into the second half and Cliff Jackson latched onto a punt into the penalty area at the Holmesdale end, flicked the ball over the keeper and we were one up. The crowd and the team relaxed and we tore into Pompey. Stevie Kember made it 2-0 with a great solo goal, it would have made the Big Match goal of the season but the entries were already closed.

Against the run of play Pompey nicked one back only for Palace to win a vital penalty. Much to most people's surprise up stepped captain John Sewell to take the spot kick. Dear old Shovel scuffed the kick but after what seemed many bounces on the very bumpy pitch the ball crept in and two vital points were ours !

Just four games to go 5 points would be enough, but two tough away games lay ahead in the next week with our unbeaten run now at 12 games were we going to hold our nerve. Much nail biting in SE25 in the next 14 days, we really were so close

Very true.

Apart from the terrace stuff, if I recall correctly, the 3 South London teams had very even support back then in terms of following. I believe I lived right in the epi center of that 3 way support on the Forest Hill/Brockley border. Around Stanstead Road and Brockley Rise.

So it was great that Palace made their first break into Division One that season, it's basically when Palace started their claim to become South Londons number one.... It's taken decades since then though to entrench a definitive arguable case for that mantle. Still the march for that status, definitely became achievable from that season.

My absolute first game attending with my mates was that season.... V Millwall at home. A lot happened that day.... It was a interesting trip home with the mostly Millwall fans back to Forest Hill Station as their very angry and destructive hoardes went on to New Cross and beyond. I dont think there was light bulb, piece of ceiling or window left by the time we got to Penge station.

Had a weird dream about Scuffer Sewell the other night. Dreamt we were playing the great Leeds in a couple of seasons time, and the Shovel curled a bannana kick past a bewildered Gary Sprake. Wonder if dreams ever come true?

Brilliant to see that again. Now if only the person with the film of the Fulham game would share it....

It was a windy day and as Sewell stepped up the ball was blown slightly off the spot as he kicked it.

He did indeed and very well done it was. The point that day proved vital. Now to repeat the Man City double that season (69/70) next Sunday

Tuesday April 8th 1969. Huddersfield 0 - Palace 0

The Tuesday after Easter provided us with a difficult trip to Yorkshire to play Huddersfield. A tough 0-0 draw provided us with a hard won point as Huddersfield were to finish 6th at the season end. We remained 2nd in the table, but now with a two point gap over Middlesborough.

It was becoming very tense now with just three games to play for Palace and only two for Boro'. A tough game away to Preston was the next fixture, a win and results going well for us in other games would see us reach division 1 for the first time. 13 games unbeaten a huge effort had put is in pole position, promotion was ours to lose!!!!

Deepdale in those days was not a happy hunting ground for us, so its a tough game ahead

50 years ago today 12th April 1969

Preston North End 0 Crystal Palace 0

So a little after 4.40pm this day 50 years ago for the first time in their history Crystal Palace FC became a top flight team. After 64 year of ups and mainly downs we had made it into the big time. OR HAD WE ?

David Coleman congratulated Palace on their promotion on Grandstand, remember it as though it was yesterday. I could not go to Deepdale as I was working in the morning in the afternoon went out for a walk with my Dad we were just so nervous. Arrived home to watch the scores come through on the teleprinter and there it was PNE 0 Palace 0 and then David Coleman in his sporty sweater was congratulating us, however....

We had two games to play, Charlton had two games to play, Middleborough were out of it. We were four points clear of Charlton

We had a better goal average than Charlton, but only just. Therefore should we lose our last two games and Charlton win theirs with enough goals on either side they could just pip us. It was unlikely and I guess that's why congratulations were issued and celebrations starting. However this was Palace and in the years ahead we experienced the horror of thinking we were there (either up or saved from going down) only to see it blow up in our faces. Deep down we new we could not blow this, but........
