Liberal Democrat Leadership Election

I thought we might as well have a thread on it seeing as there is a Tory one, and Vince Cable is obviously stepping down on the 23rd July. Don't really know the candidates but the clear favourite seems to be Jo Swinson.

Ed Davey will run I assume.

Davey is ambitious. I suspect he'd be quite a formidable leader.

Not much interest on the BBS in this contest. We have more lib Dems voters than other parties but they all seem to be on threads criticising Tories and Labour.

Lib dems must be total crap not to be streets ahead of both Lab and Con after the last couple of years.

If you've got kids subject to tuition and maintenance loans, it's still a live issue.

I'm not sure they had a choice. You can't spend decades preaching about how great PR is and how coalitions (which are near inevitable under PR) are "grown up adult politics" and then refuse to join one the first time you're offered.

The problem wasn't going into coalition. The problem was a) Clegg looking so smug about it, instead of making clear it was an uncomfortable necessity and making the argument for what concessions the Lib Dems would get and b) their negotiating priorities. They spent enormous political capital getting a referendum to change the voting system that Labour and the Tories just teamed up to ensure it lost. Was a waste.

My hope is for a strong growth of lib dems and a lib Labour coalition I think it's the only real chance of an elected opposition unless the SNP collapse

accepting the AV referendum was a poison chalice. They needed PR. That and raising student tuition crippled them

That's one way of looking at it. The other is that they were the junior partner in a coalition government and were therefore unable to get through all of their preferred policies and had to make some compromises.

Which is a real shame - she would have had my vote and that of many others. She's a brilliant campaigner and speaker. Definitely one for the future, this chance came just a tad too early.

Looks to be a straight two way fight between Ed Davey and Jo Swinson. Ed will have to go some - I think the grassroots are wary of appointing another white middle aged man.

Yep, the tuition fees were introduced by Labour. The coalition introduced the 9K fee, which is so high that itís becoming a tipping point for many.

Aside from the fact that Labour were as committed to rising it as the Conservatives, this simply isn't true. Since you don't start paying it back to you are working and earning enough, it's made no discernable difference.

In fact more students from less well off backgrounds are going to University in England and Wales than in Scotland, where there are a set number of free places which are primarily gobbled up by middle/upper class kids.

There are arguments against tution fees. The argument that the change from £3k a year to £9k has been some kind of tipping point is not one of them.
