Complete nonsense

After two relatively successful years the 23s are struggling this season.

However, having lost all 4 games in October it would appear something isn't right.

Many thanks to Richard Shaw for his time at Palace and for his role in bringing AWB through.

When will we end our obsession with employing people based on the fact they used to play for us? It should be on merit and maybe we can make some 'legends' of the future, stop trying to revisit the past.

Let's hire progressive, upcoming and bright young football professionals (see Steven Reid and Ben Garner - both decided they didn't want to be at Palace).

Reminds me of that time the Football Focus cameras stumbled into Parish's hidden NAZI lair, behind the club shop.

Was my story.

To address a few points: It's actually worked out well having ex Palace players as coaches. Richard Shaw was one of the best at the club in my opinion and him leaving the club is a real shame.

There is a need for a balance. I totally agree that people like Reid and Garner are needed, but Shaw (and Derry) have been through the experience of breaking through at clubs (Shaw with Palace) and know what it takes. I'll probably be writing an opinion based piece on this in due course so don't want to write it all here, but just think bashing ideas on the basis of perceived 'jobs for the boys' is wrong. It can be the case, undoubtedly but Shaw was one of the best and firmly in his role on merit.

Palace seems to have a pretty good record of producing players who move on to success as coaches or managers.
It's a shame that we don't seem able to hang on to well-regarded coaches (or managers). Palace is unfashionable and apparently not a big draw for talented coaches.

Watch the mood change on here if Richard Shaw turns up at a rival Prem club !

For sure, in the piece I mentioned a handful of coaches who have gone on to better things but the club has quite a few ex pros who are good at their jobs. It's hard to keep hold of players and coaches when big clubs come in for them. Moreso coaches I would say.

Most academies seem to have ex players in charge at most levels.

If our U23s are going nowhere, he must take some responsibility, he has been in charge for 6 years. A fresh approach with Derry maybe whatís needed.

Where do u23 teams go? You are only as good as the players currently moving through the team, you may only be trying to turn one or two players into first team players at a time. If you are coaching well that is all that matters.

Well that is for you to decide. I liked Shaw, and he was a football coach at Palace doing well, hardly a massive jump in possibilities.

I was for George Carlin being DOF but he died.

Good luck to Richard Shaw, whatever he goes on to do.

He might have had a tough time in his early management career, but I believe Shaun Derry is highly regarded, and definitely one for the future.
