The Hollywood sign nearly got burnt a couple of month ago, but escaped.

Now we have some people coming to stay with us because they have been evacuated.

It stinks of smoke here at work today…. And I don’t mean cigarette smoke.

It was interesting driving to work in the dawns early light this morning… about 120 degrees of my view had flames visible around the crest line in the surrounding hills.

New one started to the back of me at 3pm. The tanker planes are all over it, but have to quit in the dark.

These guys are incredible... I hope they earn mega bugs for what they do... them and the helicopter pilots.

Bitch time.... Why do we in California have to "rent" these 3 water tanker planes from Canada? Governor Arnie should be ordering at least 10 of these planes at whatever price.... we need 20 of these today.... not 3 rented for 3-4 months a year... it's going to get worse before it gets better.

No.... plenty of Bell helicopters and a couple of big old Sikorskis.

They do have one converted old DC10, which they bring out on special occasions (a bit like Notre Dame wearing green shirts). Trouble is it is a bit of an experiment, and nearly crashed last time they dug it out when it clipped a tree.

I hear they are going to use it in San Diego right now.... evidently it can drop 1/8 of a mile of water in one run. Trouble is it has to land a refill. The ones from Canada are seaplanes... and do a scoop deal into the water without stopping. Anyone see that Tom Cruise film with the diver up in a tree?

The DC10 is based in San Francisco, isn't it?

Evergreen International also own a couple of these planes I gather, I wonder if they're being hired.

It sounds like a war zone out there this morning... Helicopters everywhere... unfortunately most of them are TV crews, and not the water dropping kind.

Another couple of new fire started over night, with little or no containment of the others.

Still very windy.

I was at the Grand Canyon about 2-3 years ago and those winds blew the smoke all the way over.
