Great post, Si.

Just one other part that set the anti-Wright thing into overdrive is his ridiculous assualt on Youngs shin shortly after his goal. We booed (obviously) but then Wright turned and blew kisses to the away fans and that was the moment that really took the piss.

A goal is part of football - people can stomach that. When you injure our player and then mock us, that's what crushes the support you had at the club.

Now, I will say, he did a great move with his actions after the 0-0 home game in 1997 and started building bridges again with the Palace fans.

Personally, I'm over all that hate now (which is ironic for a bloke who wrote fanzine fuelled by anti-Wright/Arsenal hate for its first year) and while I dont revere him like I do Nigel Martyn and Bright, I do appreciate the great moments he gave us.

Wright was critical of Alan Shearer for not putting the 1990 Cup Final versus Manchester United in the top three modern day best Finals. He genuinely was passionate about his experience and the adrenaline rush coming on as a late sub and scoring twice, and sad for the club that we didn't deservedly win the game. He also revealed his awful experience of sitting in the stand unable to play in an incredible win in the semis versus Liverpool.

Didn't know about the Top 3 thing. Cleary ours is in that Top 3, along with the West Ham v Liverpool and Coventry v Spurs. How far did the poll go back?

I guess if 1981 was included then the Spurs v City replay would force its way into the Top 3

Last Saturdays Match of the Day focused on the top ten Cup Finals. Wright voted for Palace 1990 (3) Wigan (2) and Wimbledon 1988 (1st). He was really passionate about Palace. Check it out on BBC i Player about 26 minutes in.

Two major upsets - OK, they are understandable shouts. Wimbledon's was that much more impressive because that may have been the very best Liverpool side of the lot, based on their quality of play and only losing twice all season in the league.

For great games, I'd have 1981 replay, 1990 and 2006 in there. Assuming they were all in the 10

always a great talent, sometimes a bit cocky but when you hear about the abuse he and other BAME teammates had to suffer, no little wonder he over celebrated.

And Ian Wright is also a nice person, i applaud what he does in the media and what he did for our club all those years ago, i was 5 in 1990 so cant commit to the memory as much as others...

I saw him in the testiminial match (when SJ played lol) and he scored a cracker down the whitehorse, came running up to us in the holmesdale as if he wanted to make it up to Plaace fans, (celebration for arsenal) when he fell out with us, i think it was spur of the moment from palace fans and from ian Wright, one of our best ever players for certain and a good man underneath..

Wright, Lombardo, Jansen, Freedman, Johnson, Speroni, Zaha - my personal list of Palace best players ive seen play.

That programme has changed my negative opinion of him somewhat.
He has had an awful lot to deal with.

Must be quite a few top level players that never made it, Wright very nearly added to that list. At 22 and full of disappointment he could easily had called it a day

Brightonís behaviour was pretty disgusting.
