Elections in Spain on Sunday

Spain votes on Sunday in general elections. We will have an extreme right wing party (Vox) represented in Congress for the first time since Franco's death - it is essentially a splinter group from the longstanding democratic right party, PP, beset by corruption scandals and recently led for many years by right centrist Mariano Rajoy. The other right wing parties have reacted to the growth of Vox by falling over each other to move further and further right. Some people suggest Vox may end up with as many as 80 representatives - certainly it is very hard to gauge quite how many they will have, and whether the three national right wing parties will together get a majority to govern, as they have in Andalucía. Suspicion is that it will depend on abstention on the left - again, as it did in Andalucía. Weather looks good for Sunday, luckily.

Funnily enough, Vox haven't really focused on race issues up to now, though I've no doubt they are keen on racism. It's all been anti feminist and anti catalán independence so far.

I've been following the demos by the Campesinos in Madrid. The papers in northern Valencia have been talking about the fall in the price of citrus fruits and the problems faced in the countryside. It seems Spain is facing similar protests as the yellow vests except much more moderately so far. I don't claim to understand Spanish politics but do with the economics. The situation in the coastal regions further up the coast are improving rapidly but they really need a sustained period of growth before the ECB takes away the proverbial punchbowl.

I have to say - I live right in the epicentre of demo territory in Madrid and haven't even noticed them.

All this said, the opinion polls are indicating a comfortable win for the Socialists and that it is more likely we will be governed by a left coalition rather than right. Podemos look to be losing a lot of votes to PSOE and abstention, while most of Vox's votes will be at the expense of other right wing parties.
The trouble is that the polls are likely to be underestimating the support for the far right option.

The article WCB posted talks about people working in the greenhouses for £600 a month? Isn't that below Spain's minimum wage and are the bosses paying the social taxes (23%?). If so, it is another example of the failure in the west to crack down on bad employers under paying workers.

Now Spain’s ruling socialist party aims to exhume Franco’s corpse from its resting place near Madrid on June 10. Last July demonstrators making the straight-armed fascist salute gathered at his tomb to oppose the exhumation.
What's that about? Does Franco have a monumental tomb?

Valle de los Caídos, The Valley of the Fallen. Built with slave labour (Republican prisoners). Loads of unnamed soldiers from both sides of the civil war are buried there.

His remains have been in the news a fair bit over the past few years - perhaps you should start taking a better class of newspaper?

I haven't read the article yet but I'm sure the figures are correct. Sanchez has already done a lot to improve wages in Spain. It is probably the key reason why he won. The right in Spain have taken a bit of hit in this election. VOX have taken votes from PP but overall there is a greater left leaning than right.

Here is the view of Expansion re Spain's economic choices. If it comes up in Spanish right click and you get a pretty good translation. In summary, there really aren't any easy choices to meet electoral promises. Spain had better hope the ECB monetary policy remains loose AND the EU/ECB should cut Spain some slack with the deficit reduction plans. (The average retired Spaniard in the social security system is taking out 44% more than they put in. Or at least I think that is what it says)?

Yes, that's right.
There used to be a reserve set aside for pensions as an investment fund, but with the financial crisis, after the PP recovered power in 2011, they drew on it and have now pretty much spent the lot:

Thanks. I'd never heard of it - a quick read on Wikipedia (if we can trust it) has more about the present controversey thank the history of the place. As both sides are buried there, was Franco genuinely trying to reconcile the breach, or was that a propaganda whitewash?

There used to be monuments and plaques and street names all over Madrid, commemorating the fallen, only on the victors’ side. They have been removed in the last five years of left wing local government. In provinces you can still find them.
I suppose that helps answer that question. It was a National Catholic dictatorship and you would expect a deal of respect for the dead, but it’s true that the dead of one side appears to have been more valued than the other (mass graves, baby switcheroos and so on).
