Palace U18's 3 Chelsea U18's 1

An excellent performance by the Palace youth to beat Chelsea 3-1 at home in the league this morning.
Team was (apologies for spelling errors):
GK K.Thorpe
RB M.Abnett
LB H.Adelakun
CB1 Jack ?
CB2 J.Neuwani
RM K.Cadogan
LM K.Dijalli
CM1 R.Carolan
CM2 J.Comley
SS J.Smith
CF N.Pinney
Jerson Dos Santos came on as sub in 80th minute.

Fairly even 1st 25 mins that Palace shaded. Then on 27 mins, great work wide right by Pinney who crossed for Smith to side foot home from 6 yards. 30 seconds later, long range effort by Comley narrowly wide. 30 seconds after that Chels hit same post twice in same attack! Then a minute later, Carolan smashed one into top corner from 25 yards.

Palace on top for rest of 1st half and fully deserved 2-0 HT lead.

Chels started 2nd half well and had a 10 minute spell when on top. Their CF scored a nice goal in 52 minute which went in off post. But 5 minutes later, a cleverly disguised pass by Comley found Cadogan in the area who cut inside final defender and side footed home from 10 yards.

Palace generally comfortable after that and could have extended lead from some set pieces.

An excellent performance in every player did well. One of their best of the season (Chels won 3-2 away at ManU in FA youth cup midweek). Abnett and Smith were the stand out performers but Pinney also did well for the first 80 minutes before not being as happy when stuck out wide for last 10 mins after Dos Santos came on.

The win helps cement Palace in 2nd place in the league (behind Arsenal).

Well worth grabbing a game when you can as they try and play decent football.

I believe the U16's lost 3-0 to Chels on the next pitch.

The Under 18s slipped to their first defeat in seven matches at the weekend in their final away league match before the Christmas break.

Five wins and a draw was the record since a defeat at home to Southampton in early October but at Crystal Palace, the young Blues were 2-0 down by the interval and despite pulling a goal back early in the second half, were unable to prevent the home team re-establishing their advantage.

Following the FA Youth Cup win at Old Trafford last time out, the side reverted to a more familiar league line up. Five of the side that began the Man United win began this game and it was a similar story to much of the season so far - Chelsea looking good pushing forward but vulnerable at the back.

The first of Palace's first-half goals came on the break when a ball was played in behind left back Ben Gordon before being squared into the box for a finishing shot.

The second goal was the result of possession given away in midfield, Palace switching play and then scoring from just outside the box.

Hope of a second-half revival gathered pace following a move down the right-hand side involving Nikki Ahamed and Jacopo Sala (pictured).

Right-back Ahamed drove inside and played a good ball to Marko Mitrovic who was running in between the two centre-halves. The Swedish Under 17 international beat one of those defenders to the ball on the edge of the area and smashed it into the corner for his second goal of the season.

However Palace restored a two-goal cushion when the Chelsea defence was caught on the wrong side of another ball down their left-hand side.

Dermot Drummy, Chelsea Under 16s coach who is in charge of the youth side while Paul Clement looks after the reserves, reports:

'We played some good football and our goal was a very well worked move, but we made a few too many defensive errors.

'Josh McEachran performed well for an Under 16, Jacopo Sala had a very good second half and Nikki Ahamed played very well.'

The Under 18s final home game before Christmas is on Friday at Cobham when West Ham are the visitors for an 11am kick off. On the same day, the opponents in the fourth round of the FA Youth Cup will be drawn.

Team: Jan Sebek; Nikki Ahamed, Billy-Joe King, Jack Saville, Ben Gordon; Josh McEachran (Jordan Tabor), Conor Clifford, Daniel Philliskirk (c); Marko Mitrovic, Frank Nouble (Aliu Djalo), Jacopo Sala.
