Liam Miller is a much better player than people think. Certainly better than Derry

Mellor is also not bad.

Miller is quality. Carried us to the play-off final, pretty much.

Yes please to Liam Miller.

No thanks to his (probably) extortianate wages.

1. I doubt he is on that much.
2. The fact that his contract has not been renewed suggests maybe he will have to accept less this time.
3. In a recession such as this does anyone seriously expect a pay rise - apart from gvt employees?

Fair points. However, given the seeming struggle that we had to find 1,000 p/w to pay Rui Fonte's wages, his wages will probably be 'extortianate' by our standards.

Of course, it depends on who we can get rid of and a restructuring of our wage budget but I fear that even players that demand as much as Miller may (4/5k p/week?) will be out of our reach.

I would suggest then that it is only midfielders and strikers we look for.

In fact I suggest we only one of each but make them real quality.

A centre forward to play with Moses and Scannel (I like Beattie) and a midfield playmaker in the mould of Ben Watson - to play alongside Derry/Comley Danns/Carle

If Ifill goes we may also want an experienced back up rather than havong to play Moses and Scannel week in week out.
Gonna have to disagree with this in parts. We might have lots of bodies at the back but the way we fell apart after McCarthy's shoulder says we need some better cover at centre-back. I also think we're not going to get a better player than Carle to audition for the part of midfield playmaker. We do really need some quality up front though, the different a player like Beattie made was immense.

I would rather pick up Bosmans from Leagues 1 and 2, or do the equivalent of what Wigan did to us with Ben Watson and pick up star players in their last year of contract.

I'd rather never sign 'proven' players ever again, by that I mean seasoned Premier League, or even Championship campaigners. Ok, perhaps that's a little extreme as you do need experience in any team, but I'd rather sign Clint Hills than Carl Fletchers or Paul Ifills in that case. But I would certainly like our transfer strategy to be picking up the best League 1/2/Blue Square talent that we can afford and sell them for healthy profit a few years later. Now there's probably talent in the divisions below us which we can't afford - George Boyd, Aaron McLean - but scratch below the surface and I bet there are some gems down there. Jimmy Bullard didn't attract much fanfare when he was at Peterborough, or indeed David Nugent when he was at Bury.

We would then have a squad of players desperate to prove themselves, but perhaps more importantly we would substantially reduce our wage bill. It's about time football clubs began to be run as proper businesses, but at the moment most clubs in the Championship gamble their futures by chasing the Premier League dream. Some do so more than others, but football clubs should be run at a profit - or at worst break even - and I don't see why this isn't realistic.

Anybody who has ever read Moneyball by Michael Lewis - or indeed follows Major League Baseball - will be familiar with the case of the Oakland A's and their General Manager Billy Beane. Whilst American sports operate differently to our football pyramid system, baseball is the closest comparison as the difference in budgets between the richest and poorest is roughly 5:1 (versus 1.5:1 in American football and basketball). Despite being at the lower end of the scale, the Oakland A's constantly outperformed the richer teams in the league and ran at a profit. They did so by acquiring cast offs from their rivals, turning them into stars and moving them on when they became too expensive.

If Palace were able to replicate this model then we shouldn't fret about losing Ben Watsons and Andy Johnsons; every player is replaceable, it's about replacing the aggregate rather than the individual. If, for instance, Ben Watson's presence leads to 30 goals scored and 10 goals conceded per season, when he leaves, you need to make up a margin of 20 goals, rather than the 30 goals scored. Do so by signing a midfielder and a striker from the lower leagues who between them lead to 25 goals scored, but only 5 goals conceded. A bit simplistic, but you get my drift.

Selling the likes of Clyne and Moses would be a different proposition because of the excitement they provide and the potential they have. But if we have to sell them to balance the books, then so be it; I would just hope that a sensible transfer policy in future years would allow us to hold on to the next crop of youngsters for a bit longer.

Miller won't be on much. He's a quality player, but his career's pretty much dried up - was all set to move to Toronto FC I think, a few months ago? Approaching his late twenties, only given a six-month contract by QPR, reputation for disciplinary problems, out in the cold at international level....

problem with Miller is that he's very lightweight. Excellent on the ball but (judging off his season at Leeds, anyway) a bit lazy and content to stroll around with his hands on his hips if he's not given as much time & space as he wants. You have to play to his strengths. Doubt that many CCC clubs are prepared to make him that central to their midfield play; and as a result are likely to see him in ineffective passenger mode. Can be much better than that.

Really rate Croft as well, some pretty talented players up for grabs this summer.

While I agree with you in the main zonin, we've got a lot of young, inexperienced talented players at the club already. Too many starts to get dangerous.

I suppose I was a bit vague; I absolutely would want a nucleus of experience in the squad. We have the likes of Derry, Fonte, Carle, Danns, Hill and Kuqi. But rather than sign a Carl Fletcher from the Premier League, I'd rather see an equivalent of a Dean Whitehead, Liam Lawrence or Jimmy Bullard when they signed for Sunderland and Peterborough. Not youngsters, but 22-26 year olds who have 150 league games under their belt and who still have time for their value to appreciate.

All those are decent frees IMO. And if we wanted Fontaine (I don't know if he's good enough so don't shoot me down) I'm pretty sure we could get him - he's from the area and is a Palace fan.

Surely we can get the player we've always wanted. The one that ripped us apart whenever he played against us. Where are you...
