Crystal Palace 1861 (re-claim?)

Now we are a debt free well run club looking to fly home to the NSC.

Wouldn't it be amazing if we incorporated the 1861 title in our new stadium along with a new badge which would have 1861 on it somewhere? We will be linked by the ground now! (hopefully)

It is after all the home of 1861 side, we the 1905 team played there less time than the original cpfc, and other teams have claimed older teams history in the past such as Hitchin who 1861 actually played in first ever FA Cup against and drew 0-0 but we both went through to the Semis!

To view the link you have to Register or Login.

I was always a bit surprised more wasn't made of the connection. Don't know if you could now start indicating 1861 was when we began though, although clearly, a Crystal Palace football club must have been one of the earliest clubs in London?

Somebody has missed a trick - 1861 is 150 years ago - so with the connection of both being on the same stretch of land - with exactly the same name -
both the original CPFC and our club from 1905 are linked - we would be the only Club in history to celebrate our 150th Anniversary 6 years after our 100th!

Cramming 50 years into 6 sounds about right for Palace!

Seriously though - this a marketing opportunity that has been missed by both
the Club Shop - who have a ready made theme in the 150 th Anniversary to put some different merchandise in - and CPFC2010 should be using the fact that a Palace team have been playing for 150 years at CPP to show how strong our link to the Park is.

In reality - there seems to be about 30 years between the 1861 CPFC stopping (probably in 1875) and the current club starting in 1905. The major link between to the two clubs would have been the Crystal Palace Company who owned the Palace and Park - some of the original players must have been on the Staff at the CPC - and it was the CPC who actually started our CPFC after the success of the FA Cup Finals - which came to Crystal Palace in
1895.

If AFC Wimbledon can claim the history of Wimbledon FC, then we should be able to claim CPFC (1861) as our spritual predecessors at the very least

No harm in this, after all AFC Wimbledon like to think they have some connection with the former league club Wimbledon.

I believe they stopped in 1875 due to residents complaining.

Things I have learnt from this thread:

Everyone can stop admiring AFC Wimbledon now. We were the first phoenix club. What could be achieved in thirty years back then can be achieved in thirty days now, so there's no problem there.

Our club has always had to fight for survival, opposed by everyone from nimbys to banks.

Viva Palace!

We are not debt free - there are four mortgages registered against the Company - that will be directors loans I would guess without having downloaded them - the position now however is that the monies loaned are soft loans from the owners rather than hard loans from the banks and hedge funds - the loans will have been expected and are probably the amount need to fund the takeover plus running costs for this year for the pre-paid ST's.

And I think suddenly retrospectively claiming the history of a completely different club with no actual links other than the name is about as naff as you can get. We are Crystal Palace we were founded in 1905 - to pretend otherwise will only lead to ridicule.

That said there is no reason not to give a nod to the older club but it wasn't us - 30 years is a long time.

Ok so we have a bit of debt who doesnt!!!

But we are well run now.

Its a shame the old side wasn't formed in 1865 to coincide with the planned stadium date, but wouldn't matter if the 150th anniversary was a little late

The problem is people associate the modern CPFC, Selhurst and our Badge with failure especially the new badge as it has seen 2 administrations.

I think we need to go back to our beginnings to move forward reinvent ourselves.

A new Stadium with our new found heritage with a new brand which is the 1861 brand is the way of the new winning modern historical Crystal Palace F.C. 1861!!!

It is modern but has more history than the 1905 side!

Agree
The kit is scarily similar to another London club that I wouldn't want us to be mistaken for

We are not a brand we are a club - we cannot invent a history that doesn't exist or try and pretend our history hasn't happened and take someone elses - we don't have a choice about who we are or what our ups and downs have been - rewriting history is never a very clever thing to do and is generally done by those with something to hide. Lets try and leave that sort of thing behind us behind us - to try and do it would indeed tarnish the 'brand' as I think we are now in a new open and honest phase.

New Found Heritage = fantasy and incorrect history.

You are right about the debt though - this is normal and acceptable debt and is not a concern.
