The prime minister said his “vision for our schooling system” was to place education into the hands of headteachers and teachers rather than “bureaucrats”

Pretty sure from what I've read on here, Steve has bailed out prior to this shit being implemented.

Teaching crisis in a couple of years from now, as they quit in droves.

I'm just glad I had the foresight to start retraining back in September!

I'd assumed the collective noun for teachers resigning on mass was Goves, not droves.

Wonder how it will impact support staff, of which I am one, within the system. Wonder if it is worth me training to be a teacher now.

Of course it is, ignore the usual left wing "we're all doomed" message. They're simply afraid of change.

OK where's the evidence that this change will do any good?
Even Ofsted don't think academy's are necessarily any better than council run schools. This is simply an ideological decision based on lining the pockets of those who fund the Tory party.
What makes it worse is that the Labour party came up with the idea of Academys so Tony and Gordon could have even more power.
I genuinely fear for my daughters future in this country

I agree and at the end of it all, we will have good and bad academies.

And what is the key factor on whether a place of education is good or bad?

It is down to teachers and in particular head teachers. In my experience, good teachers want to work at a school with a good head teacher.

It is not change that we fear and academies are not necessarily a bad thing. I just resent the time and money that will be spent on this "experiment" which ultimately affects our children and not the children of David Cameron and co.

It's hard to tell from reading the article how far this will go. In New Zealand we introduced a system in the late 1980s wherein regionalised Education Boards were disbanded in favour of a Board of Trustees at each individual school. Of course, the most influential figure of the board is, inevitably, the school's principal. The system continues to this day with Boards elected on a three year cycle. In fact, a new cycle is about to begin.

The perceived advantage was that, just as it's being sold to you, bureaucrats would be replaced by invested expertise - people at the coalface. The reality is that the old Education Boards were invested but they weren't partisan. Boards very much are and will cheerful cut the throat of rival schools. Because many resources are contestably funded, often based on student numbers, schools now have advertising budgets to secure enrollments. That money, of course, comes out of classroom budgets. It's very sad.

It has also meant that the success of a Board depends on the expertise in the parents of their pupil population. At schools in wealthy suburbs, it's not hard to get parents with experience in business, accounting, management and education and thus to run an effective ship. At schools in impoverished and welfare dependent areas, Boards are often well meaning but lacking in the experience and training to run a multi-million dollar enterprise efficiently.

This didn't happen. Our unions (PPTA and NZEI) have generally stayed solid so education remains the only field in New Zealand where there is a national Collective Employment Contract. Successive National (i.e. Tory) governments have tried to break it but make no progress in the face of worker unity. Labour governments tend to leave it alone, though they still scrap to limit entitlements.

Support staff conversely have been heavily stung because they have less political muscle. They are bulk funded and often only paid for the school terms rather than the full year.

As a teacher in Sweden, I can say that the privatisation of schools here has been an unmitigated disaster. I work in a school run by the local authority which isn't privatised but the examples I have seen of the schools and colleges which are, the emphasis is on the bottom line. So much so that a number of schools have left their students high and dry when it came to exams and entrance tests. The owners of the schools scarpered with the dough and the schools simply closed. Students had to find alternative education. Hard to fathom but true.

Not sure I'd want to be a teacher but it would nice not to have annual appraisals and the dreaded bell curve.

What teachers are fed up with is the decades of politically motivated tinkering.
There is absolutely no reliable evidence one way or the other regarding the effectiveness of academies. To make these wholesale changes without analysis of reliable evidence is disgraceful.
