Amazon and Premier League

A few of the sports hacks are reporting that Amazon have the final Premier League rights package.

It's only 20 matches per season but I guess the question is how will they price it? It would be interesting to see if it's available as part of the Prime subscription, but I can't see that coming without an extra cost.

Interesting. Be nice if they put the first year at least on Prime. Could work out well for them too since surely that increases Prime membership. However, it'll be on pay per game won't it!!?

Pay per game would probably be counter productive without a tiering system because not all games are equal, so I can't see that working. The article also says that the package covers whole rounds of midweek or bank holiday games

Reckon it could be the entire package on offer for a surcharge on the Prime membership.

From 2019/20 Amazon Prime members will have “exclusive access to watch 20 matches per season, comprising two full fixture rounds – the first December midweek round and the festive Bank Holiday round - featuring live coverage of every Premier League team.”

It will be included in Amazon Prime.

£4 per game for those without prime isn't too bad.

I think this shows that TV money inflation is stagnant in the current model, and with BT essentially backing down from its fight with Sky I think we're going to see a reduction in Tv monies if nothing changes.

The only way they can go bigger is to offer global rights so that the global streaming companies can get involved.

It wouldn't surprise me if they raise the Prime membership price in the medium to long term, as they've done in the US recently. The amounts these digital giants are spending on content is eye watering.

Looks like the post Christmas fixtures will be as stupid this year as they were last year. I recall Pardiola moaning about West Brom having 1 day in between games whereas the Spammers who they were playing (and lost to in the last minute) had about 8. To be fair he had a point. West Brom also had Arsenal on NYE evening I think. So Arsenal fans had to rush home after a bore draw to get to their festivities. Stupid.

Possibly, but they can generally spend those amounts because they have a global audience and own the whole of the model from production to distribution.

For a traditional TV series you produce for one country/TV channel and then it's syndicated out to other TV networks in other countries, who all need to make a profit.

Instead Netflix can spend $130m on a series of The Crown because the additional cost for them to get it to someone in India or New Zealand or anywhere else in the world is not far from zero and they get all of the revenue.

As a result, the current PL TV rights model doesn't work for those companies - they want to have global distribution.

This will all be a moot point in 10-20 years. The old broadcaster model is doomed and the Premier League will eventually launch it's own standalone subscription service globally.

This. Amazon, Facebook and YouTube will all be streaming Premier League football within the next 3/4 TV deals.

Not entirely.

If the PL go to a global distribution model then I think they will just run their own streaming service.

I don't know how it works now, but does this now mean you need Sky, BT and Amazon subscriptions to watch the games? Expensive if you want all of it.

If you pay subscriptions, then yes. An interesting consequence of forcing the market up to competition! It's why pubs who don't have dodgy streams, don't always have BT on top of Sky. The fees to them are eye watering.

I am sure I will regret saying this but I quite like Amazon getting these. They are at the eof day a huge corporate but out of all of that group (Google, facebook, Microsoft, Apple etc. they offer competitive pricing to grow scale and haven't just cash cowed things). So I feel I genuinely get good/reasonable value with everything I have had from them.

Shame it is just 2 days.

Every game on the midweek fixture in December and every boxing day game. You will be guaranteed 2 Palace games, find out next week which 2 they are.

That has to be the worry if clubs are anticipating another quantum leap in TV monies.

What worries me is eventually the League will realise that most illegal streaming of Pre TV is for fans to watch their own clubs. As soon as they monetise that, the split of TV money arguments will all become invalid and all clubs will get only what people pay to see them.

Good for the "big 6", shit for the rest of us.
