Post Brexit Britain

I thought it would be appropriate to start a new thread on what is and will now be actually happening in a post Brexit Britain since Article 50 has been fulfilled, the withdrawal agreement passed in parliament, and we leave officially in a few days time.

The early days will be taken up with the negotiation of a free trade deal which Johnson is expecting to be concluded and passed before the end of this year. In tandem with this, our negotiators will be seeking pastures new in trade terms with other countries like the US and Australia, in addition to replacing existing deals with countries negotiated on our behalf by the EU, when we were members.

Here is an update on how it is going with one of our own commonwealth nations, Australia, who we had close trade relations with before we joined the common market back in the early 1970s. Don't be shocked, as it was always going to be a bit inevitable, and a consequence of wishful thinking:

God for a minute I thought there might be a good news thread on the BBS about the Tories or Brexit especially when negotiating new deals from the start.

The UK is Australia's eighth-largest trading partner, with two-way trade valued at $26.9 billion in 2018. Britain is also the second-largest source of total foreign investment in Australia.

Humiliation for Liz Truss is the key point in the article. Her aspirations for a sunnier upland deal with visa free movement of travel to Oz, was never going to happen.

Some of the reasons for people on here wanting brexit were, literally, ripe for parody. It will be interesting to see if they get the change they wanted.

Well at least there can no longer be complaints about a remainer parliament obstructing the will of the people. Any failures from here are entirely a failing of the conservatives and brexit supporters.

Probably just as well; wasn't an end to freedom of movement a key reason for leaving?

The Aussies were apparently concerned about a load of unskilled brits moving to simultaneously take their jobs and sponge off the system. You have to laugh.

Shocked to see that Australia is our eigth largest trading partner. I thought according to Brexiters we could only trade with the EU and we are only now free to trade with the rest of the world. Seems they were wrong. I wonder what we can now sell them out of the EU that we couldn't sell when in the EU?

lol - current Facebook feed is full of Brexit voters, who then voted Tory in December, posting links to petitions to save our NHS from US hands. Wish I was making it up.

But they are not thick as a submarine door, they don't like it when you use their own actions to point this out.

Voting Tory to protest against Tory policies, then protest against Tory policies, consistency in some strange parallel world.

BTW - some of the figures on here need clarifying. We are Australia's 8th biggest trade partner; they are a long way down our list.

According to this: To view the link you have to Register or Login

Our exports to Oz were worth 5.9 billion USD in 2018 and we had a trade surplus of 2.18 billion USD, which assume to mean our imports from Oz were worth 3.72 billion USD.

Which is all very small fry. Particularly when when have just put a bullet through in excess of £225 billion USD worth of exports to the EU. Suspect Brexit enthusiasts are only looking at deficits without thinking about what needs to happen to turn them around. We've already a surplus with the US which Trump wants to reverse and more. Careful what you wish for.

In the decade before the Brexit vote the UK's proportion of trade to non EU countries had been increasing gradually. How this equates with being unable to trade effectively with the rest of the world as a member is a mystery.

See Germany and how they struggle to export around the world under the tyranny of the EU.

Well we could only trade with those who the EU had a trade deal with. Unsurprisingly being a world trade organsiation, it pretty much meant you could trade with everyone (because who doesn't want to trade with the worlds largest trade organisation).

Now it could be an advantage (ie we get to negotiate our own trade deals with countries which has political benefits) or a disadvantage (we're no longer coming in with the same leverage, and we'll likely get less favourible terms).

Oh look, another thread started by remainers in the politics forum to complain about Brexit.

Why did this need a new thread? Maybe it should just be merged with the others that you have made the same points on?
