The easiest way to avoid relegation

12 games

3 wins 1 draw 8 defeats or 10 draws 2 defeats?

Simple equation yet we still persist with our safety first pack the midfield team selection

Roy the stats do not lie our team formation is not getting the best out of our players it hasn’t ALL SEASON

26 games and we have failed to score in the 45 mins of 21 of them
No goals in the first 15 mins of ANY game
No clean sheets in 10
BOTTOM of current form table
LOWEST number of shots on target if any PL team

We need only 10 points the competition gives you 3 times the point value for scoring more goals than the opposition

SO PLEASE CAN WE PLAY TO OUR ATTACKING STRENGTHS FOR GOODNESS SAKE

Can we all finally agree now that how we attack isn't working? That maybe we should try something different? Like playing Zaha up front with Benteke, with Meyer or Ayew in behind? Or Zaha and Andros up front, with Meyer an extra midfielder? All options would give us better movement, get away from the inevitable one-sided wing play and would not hurt our ability to defend.

We'll probably limp over the line anyway. Thank God for all those VAR decisions which won us crucial wins earlier in the season. It blinded some of us to how poor we were and gave some of us a false sense of success but it should also give us the headstart we need. As utterly creatively bankrupt as we have seen to make ourselves via our transfers over the last seven years, surely even we can manage a few one-nil wins? Would help if those opposition defenders tripped Wilf a bit more in the box. They don't make it easy for us to score goals when they don't give us penalties, the bastards.

If Guaita doesn't fumble one into the goal, we're sitting in tenth right now and it's a lot less likely we are having this conversation. I don't see us as 'poor'... i call us 'fragile.' How many points have we given up on a single silly, brief moment of less than perfect judgment... and how many have we picked up due to a moment of unrepeatable unexpected fortuitous swinging of a foot?

A few weeks ago I realized that, this year, I wouldn't be surprised to see us end 5th... or 18th. That's just the way this year is going. But we do have some challenges. Zaha's value is diminished, Benteke is nearly useless and most others couldn't find the goal right now with a compass and a flashlight (torch?).

The back 5 picks itself so keep them fit.

Play Kouyate and Jimmy Mac. They are the only MF capable of driving the ball forward from defence to attack.

Get Andros back on the other wing, freeing up space for Wilf - get them to swap wings regularly and keep their defenders guessing. BE LESS PREDICTABLE ROY!!!

Play Ayew up top or in the hole. Yes Benteke has scored but he’s just not good enough to play up top. I wish he was but we score more goals with movement and that means Ayew.

Start off more positive, try and get an early goal and then go and get another one before shutting up shop.

We play well against big teams and we’re hard to break down, but against weaker teams have a bloody go.

Pray

Cenk Tosun with Ayew behind may be worth a try with Benteke off the bench.

A few simple changes

Ayew playing behind Benteke with Wilf and Andros wide. Roy loves Benteke and he actually played well vs Everton. Whether he can keep this up who knows.

Kouyate back centrally - need his energy. Probably couple with McCarthur though Schlupp would be ideal once returned.

Then have a whole host of options from the bench to go more solid whilst still offering a threat with Tosun later in the game.

We would still be having this conversation had we got a 0-0 against Sheffield United. All of the stats/facts that the OP mentions would have remained the same. We don't score goals, we don't create chances/have shots on target, our star player doesn't want to be here and has basically given up (it's actually in his interest we get relegated as he would get his move) and now we cant keep clean sheets.

Some of us were having this conversation when we were in 7th place. We need to attack more than we do. If a change of system allows that, that is what we need.

If we dont concede another goal we stay up. If we play with two wingers and one def midfield player that gives us the option of an extra midfield player we could also have Wilf up top changing from winger to striker during the game.
VG
Ward Tomkins Cahill PVA
AT McArthur Kouyate/Luka Meyer/JR Wilf
Tosun/Ayew/CB

I think we can create more and still be solid enough playing JR would give Wilf more freedom to move into the striking position. who plays up front Ayew has earned it but Tosun has not come to sit on the bench CB third choice. Id put JR on corners he delivers the ball well. Kouyate starts for me as has been said he goes forward better then Luka but its a close call.

We need only 10 points the competition gives you 3 times the point value for scoring more goals than the opposition

SO PLEASE CAN WE PLAY TO OUR ATTACKING STRENGTHS FOR GOODNESS SAKE
That's scary and all of a sudden reminded me of Dowies season.

We had to win matches and he still persisted in playing one up top against teams where we could get points. Remember Blackburn away towards the end fans crying out for Ships to be put on. Persisted in the 4-5-1 trying to nick a result and lost.

Hope history doesn't repeat itself.
