Burnley (away)

----------------------------Guaita-------------------------------
Clyne----------Kouyate-------------Dann---------------PVA
Townsend-----McArthur----------Riedewald-----------Eze
-----------------Benteke------------Zaha-----------------

After Hodgson's masterful switch in tactics against Leeds, bringing in Eze (who will surely now remain in the side until the end of the season) and Ayew (to replace a guy who is only a finisher) in order to add energy, I wonder if we might counter Burnley's aerial strength by bringing in Benteke?

I expect he will stick with Ayew. Otherwise the only other decision to make is Dann or Cahill. Still not sure Dann has the mobility of our other centre backs, but against Burnley it shouldn't matter, and I expect Dann to keep his place as well. So unchanged most likely.

Ayew was very good yesterday and doesn’t deserve to be dropped. I get the Benteke idea as he’d have Townsend, Eze and Zaha bussing around him, but maybe as a plan b.

Because Burnley have a very different style to Leeds. In fact their styles couldn't be further apart! That said, I quite understand Ayew starting again: he was very good against Leeds.

Have to start with the same team after that performance. But it’s good to have Batshuayi up our sleeve if needed. Benteke can cut the oranges up at half time.

I would like to see Cahill start but that would be harsh on Dann or Kouyate.

Burnely have trouble attacking but might be hard to break down. I would pick the same players though. Against a more attacking outfit I might bring Ward back for Clyne if he is fit, but not against these.

I probably wouldn’t change anything. It’s a huge game for Burnley and the pressure is on them to get that first win. That could play into our hands as they will probably be a little bit more attacking than they might normally be.

The only thing Roy might change is Schlupp for Townsend. That wouldn’t be a change based on form as Townsend is playing really well but more to negate Burnley’s physical style. Jeff is very good in the air and adds a big physical presence. You could move Eze out to the right where he has played for QPR before and bring Jeff in on the left. Also if Ward is fit he could return. Again nothing to do with Clyney’s performances as he was much better yesterday but more because of Wardy being much better in the air. Apart from the 2 CB’s we aren’t the biggest of sides so having Ward and Jeff would help when defending set pieces.

We also have a good record at Turf Moor so fancy Roy to pick the best team to get a result.

Horses for courses.... Burnley will play deep with structure, not open and rotating like Leeds, so its possible/likely that we will need an out ball to be more direct and by-pass a crowded midfield. Personally, i like the idea, Benteke was even smiling when he came on yesterday. He will also be useful defending against their tall players.

It's not that mental. He made a decent case. Benteke would get to play alongside Zaha ( which was where Zaha played when Benteke scored most of his goals under BFS ) and the two would also have the benefit of a midfield runner ( in Eze ) and someone able to pass ( in Jairo) around them, stopping us from being so regimented. Benteke's link up play with Zaha has always been excellent; he could contest for aerial balls to set up attacks and be a big help at set pieces at both ends of the pitch, both defending and also hopefully getting some good service from Eze. In the set up / system we played yesterday, Benteke is an entirely valid option.

As I've stated before, we never really needed Bats, if we got the rest of it right. Assuming Eze and Jairo are not just a blip and stay fit, Ayew or Benteke are perfectly good strike partners for Zaha, although having Bats as another option is still great to strenthen squad options. Still, I think it's a shame we didn't get in Gallagher to partner Jairo instead and went for Brewster. But we are building a gap to the bottom three and that's what counts.

Ward in for Clyne. Clyne is improving but ward is still tbe better player at the moment.

Still think cahill edges it over dann but I'm happy to have scotty back.

Otherwise same team

Guaita
Clyne - Kouyate - Dann - van Aanholt
Townsend - McArthur - Riedewald - Eze
Ayew - Zaha

It’s these players positions to lose now. There’s a good balance in this team that I really like.

How mad is it that a back up XI is probably a team that would be competitive in the PL too!?

Butland
Ward - Cahill - Sakho - Mitchell
Meyer - McCarthy - Milivojevic - Schlupp
Beneteke - Batshuayi

Thats without Tomkins or Kelly too. It does show however that another top centre midfielder would elevate this team and the style (thinking Tielamens of Leicester style/mould) though this comes with a hefty price tag and risk. Another back up winger wouldn't go a miss though a nice position to be in for once!

Bringing in Benteke, plays right into Burnleys hands. They have 2 good CBs, who would easily mark Benteke, having Zaha, Eze, Ayew and Townsend interchanging up front is a lot harder for them.

You maybe be right starting with a lacking in confidence striker in Benteke up front, instead of last season top scorer, but I doubt it.

Why would you to take Burnley on in the air by playing the immobile lump up front?

How does playing Benteke - a player who is only effective these days at winning balls in the air - counter Burnley's aerial strength? Surely there's no other team that would be more effective at stopping him? Or are we playing him at centre-back now?

Same team and same desire to attack as yesterday, please.

You would have to say we stick with the same after a 4-1 win surely? but as i said before the Leeds game they are a side with their very open style leaves them open to be exploited, as we did. Now with Burnley they are a very different proposition even in their current form can still be hard side to contain, but we must also keep the positive momentum going to keep our own attacking belief going.
The only change i would consider making would be is to to bring back Joel Ward to tighten up defensively against this physical side.

if you think ayew can hold the ball up...i have my doubts, and Benteke might be best to do this. I have my doubts that the same team can perform as well against Burnley who will not be so open, and we will flounder to get the ball going forward. Im not suggesting that we take them on in the air at all, Benteke is still good linking play up, just seems to have mislaid his scoring boots. ))
