Really doesn’t look good. Always worrying for someone to go missing completely out of character, but the language used in the police statement this morning did not sound good.

I’m speculating, but it must be pretty strong evidence for them to announce a serving police officer been arrested.

Suspect named as Wayne Couzens, an armed officer based in Westminster.

A PC 48, from Deal in Kent.

Seems he wasn't on duty at the time. All very strange. What would he be doing there, then. And knowing through traffic cameras that he could seen to be miles and miles from home during stay at home orders.

Poor family. (of both the victim and possible suspect)

Not followed the story closely but it is not looking good . A neighbour of ours went missing not long ago ( completely out of character ) . It was in local press occasionally but never made local or National TV . Just wondered what made this story different ?

She's a friend of a friend. Awful stuff and can't imagine what the family are going through.

I guess motive will come out eventually but wonder if he knew her or was just a random abduction, perhaps using his police credentials to gain trust or something.

That's an interesting point, a young lad went missing near where I live last week, very out of character - local facebook groups were highlighting it but it barely made the local paper until yesterday when they, sadly, found his body. I wonder at what point, a decision is made to go "national" with it.

I imagine quite a few kids go missing, but only the select few make the headlines.

They probably knew it was suspicious from the outset based on the evidence they deal with missing persons all the time - might have been a corner of a car they couldn't really see. Where she walked past one camera but not the next. Put the call out for help.

Literally a set of circumstances based on data from the 25 missing people reported every day or so... that normally leads to the most serious of crimes.

I've been reading this for a few days on the BBC website and given the route likely to be walked at 9:30pm in a very busy area there would likely be plenty of opportunity for dash cam, webcam, doorbell cameras and security cameras to catch her on some part of the route as well as eyewitnesses. I agree that it does seem to have some prominence but I did think that some evidence would be found quite quickly in this case?

A lot will 'make the national web pages' but they're rarely major news, usually being more buried down in the local news stuff (and then resurrected by links with later stories).

This one, for example, seems really have gone 'national' following an unusual twist (i.e. the arrest of a police officer). Often its only when something significant happens (discovery of a body; identified as a homicide, charges brought etc).

Its worth noting, that between 250-275,000 people are reported missing each year, with around 99% being resolved (one way or another) within a year - but that still leaves about 2500-3000 people who are 'long term missing'.

Interestingly there isn't a great deal of information about how many people are never accounted for.

Apparently 3000 people in the UK are classed as unresolved missing people cases. This varies obviously, as some are added, some are found but it remains around that total for any given year.

Unfortunately you knew when the story first broke that there was very unlikely to be a happy ending. The fact that a Met Police officer is astounding, the fact that a women seems to have helped him too is unpalatable and astonishing.

The sheer number of women who come forward to report being stalked in similar but totally unconnected events following an incident like this makes me feel physically sick.

Just seen they are excavating the officer's garden, searching nearby and have recovered his car for forensics. I feel for her family.

Have a look at twitter today. Wall-to-wall testimony of women who have been followed by men after a night out, harassed on public transport etc etc. Women having to walk different routes home so that men don't know where they live. It seems pretty much all women have experienced it.

I still believe it's a tiny minority of men who do this sort of thing, but it must be shit being a woman on your own in public at times.

The recent UN Women UK found that 97% of women aged between 18-24 had experienced harrasment. A UK Gov poll placed this at 96% which kind of supports that.

Makes for grim reading, even if it's what you kind of knew.

I'm inclined to think it's not a tiny minority of men, and hope that it's a minority.. Sadly the experience of friends has led me to believe it's a common enough experience for women, and that men pose a significant threat to women on a scale most men don't realise

My 11 year old daughter, was followed by a teenage boy on a scooter when she was 10 years old ( walking from her cousin's two roads away) , and she looks very young for her age. She doesn't carry anything of value so who knows what his motives were. Luckily she had the sense to knock on a front door and he sped off.
