Southampton 3-1 Palace

3-1 flattered them even if we did rather shoot ourselves in the foot . The second goal a killer for us just after HT was poor all round .

Im not getting too despondent in losing a dead rubber in an empty stadium . We are basically playing for time now , players and manager out of contract and probably going. Ill look forward to next season ,fans in the ground some fresh faces and a new beginning .

Tonight was hardly cataclysmic, like some have made out. Luka missed against a very big goalkeeper. Had that gone in, the entire match may have gone the other way. We screwed up on the second goal but the set piece was near perfection. Benteke missed a good chance.

We are not good enough to beat teams without the little things going our way most of the time, same as half-a-dozen other sides in the PL. When we squeak a win, which is most of what our wins are, most of us just accept it and don't think about how it could have gone the other way. Yes, we need a lot of new players to fix the contract situation but the tone on this thread has been hysterical.

Not as awful as some of comments i have read . Thought we sat back too much for a lot of first half . Lukas penalty was crucial even though Soton were on top . After 2nd goal i thought we got back in game and i felt we could equalise . Odd substitution replacing Luka with Schlupp , we were poor after that change . Having Jairo , Eze and Schlupp in midfield is too lightweight ( should have brought on McCarthy ) . Ayew had started to get into game , won 3 corners and set up Zaha . Not sure why we took him off for Batshuayi and went to 442 . Just a shambles after that and Mateta coming on when we were 2 goals down as with Man City again seemed pointless to me and will not have benefitted Mateta .
Dann is too slow for this level and Eze and Zaha were largely anonymous . .

I think the tone is a bit hysterical as it was a frustrating game and we’re usually better than that against clubs around us. If we score the penalty and can regroup at HT, maybe things go differently. Instead, Southampton scored and could sit back and although we probed quite well and had a few chances, we were undone by a quality centre forward up against a fine defender who is unfortunately at the tail end of his career.

I'm really not convinced Luka's penalty miss would've made any difference.

We would've simply came out 2nd half, sat deep and played like we did when we went 1 up. Ultimately with the key stone cops at the back we would've still conceded.

Yeah, youíre probably right, Dann and Kouyate looked shakey. Itís a shame Ings was back, he made the difference and obviously gives them belief. Heís a superb finisher.

Carbon copy of the Leicester game really.

Chance to go ahead (Leicester was a chanve to put the game to bed)...missed and then we lost. 2nd half we ran out of steam. And these were players that had a nice long break not so long ago. That means that many of them are finished at tthis level.

I suppose it is better than losing the game in the first ten minutes. It's the hope that kills you.

Any stats on how many games Palace have lost when Benteke scores first. LOL

The reason Roy needs to go is he is supposed to be a defense first manager, so we're supposed to endure woeful offensive creativity in favor of everyone playing defense. Ok, but this year, our defense is abject sh-t. So what exactly are we doing?

Kouyate has been a good soldier for us, but my god, he has been torched at times all year as a CB. And how many times today did they attack our RB, except we had absolutely no one over there. One time, Southampton had two players attacking our RB, and we still had no one over there. Ok, so Ward is supposed to mark Ings, so then who is supposed to play RB? And after our strategy failed the first time, how come it failed every time for the rest of the match? I just don't get it.

We need 4 young healthy players for a new back line. Kouyate should not be a starter anywhere in our lineup, he's good as a bench player, or maybe a purely defensive MF, and Mitchell needs competition. All our other defenders are ancient and always injured.

I don't blame Luka for the bad penalty, because he has been absolutely amazing over the years at penalties. He had one bad one, it happens.

Everybody keeps saying what a poor side Soton are. Yes, that's right..........without Ings.

The 8 games they had played without him, they had not won one.

Our central defensive midfield is simply not up to the task. Time and again they were allowed to get and turn with the ball 25-30 yards from our goal. Look a their 3rd - where on earth is Riedewald?

Luka is finished, Riedewald is too weak and positionally poor, Ayew looks lost, Wilf is shadow of his former self, defence is simply too old and too slow, and Ward had a completely nightmare all game long.

There is work to be done at Selhurst this summer

Yep but two years ago we could put out a back 4 of PVA Sakho Tomkins AWB, how far away from that level were the back 4 last night? That’s the primary reason we lost the game, thought we played OK in parts.

Too many players playing who should be nowhere near a mid table PL first team ;

Dann, Ward, Luka, Ayew, Benteke for starters with question marks growing for me over JR. That’s half of last nights team. In a dead rubber. End of season. Empty stadium.

Seriously, wtf is that about. No looking to the future, no inventiveness, no development, no leadership.

Really really poor.

Lol at anyone blaming players for 3rd goal, Roy thought 442 with a midfield 2 of Jairo and Schlupp wouldn't get destroyed at that point. That was all on him.

Exactly how I feel. Just not good enough in midfield or at centre half and without a strong, dynamic and mobile spine in this league you are knackered. I thought we played quite well last night and the players gave it everything- but they just arenít good enough in key areas. Itís really hit me now how much of a rebuild we need in the summer.

I have really liked Dann over the years but he is finished at this level. Also thanks to Kouyate for filling in this year but he should not be our CB next year. Centre midfield is weak. Why’s Kelly not being played at all? Surely he would be better than what we have at CB at the moment.

I feel quite apathetic this morning really. We were good in patches and poor in patches. The fact is we are safe, this manager and a lot of these players won’t be here in a months time. No point getting over upset with in depth analysis of our performance. Better to think positive and focus on the fact we can start planning for next season with a lot of big contracts off the wage book and some new ideas. It’ll work out either brilliantly or disastrously. Either way will be an interesting summer!

That said, I do I wish we’d play a couple of the exciting youth prospects but it was really never going to happen.

Out fought and frankly outplayed by a team without a win in their previous 8 games. If you don't work as hard and press like the opposition, you end up getting what you deserve.

I really don't feel any better this morning than I did at the final whistle last night.

Gutted!

We once again showed we are a very poor team. Southampton despite their lower league position looked a level above us.

Getting fed up with Rat Boy laughing in the face of our players - He done it to Wilf enough times which was annoying but to do it to Cheik really pissed me off - I understand banter and sledging in sports and in the main I dont have an issue with sportsmanship but to laugh in the face of your opponent is step to far.... I guess some will disagree but when you are angry and someone does that, knowing they protected by a referee and 10 team mates i think they need to have look at themselves.

Yet not a single one of our players put a reducer on him. I know itís difficult nowadays but fvck me sideways. Weíve got a terrier like McCarthy on the bench - exactly the sort of player you need in that game - and we play two absolute pussies in Luka and Jairo in there.

Absolute bullshit management
