Privatised water companies are surely a net negative.

At least they're now being punished. In the 80s they just used to dump sewage at sea from the pipes at Hastings without prosecution

Any chance the company will seek to reclaim bonus's etc paid to those in charge over the relevant period?

What do you think?

I do hope those fisheries and Oyster beds who suffered as a result of all this sue the arse of Southern Water.

Prison sentences should be dished out to those responsible for it. Arseholes. Financial penalties aren't going to discourage those responsible from doing it again.

Absolutely, the fine is minimal compared to incomes and reported profit of the company

Totally agree. They are indirectly killing people and destroying the environment. Even a fine this big is less than half their years profit.

Also if infrastructure is falling apart why are there profits.

I can't even put into words how angry this makes me. I've spent the last 5 years studying marine environmental science and I am hoping to eventually work within conservation/ecology in some capacity. What is the f*cking point when companies like this are allowed to act essentially however they want, with blatant disregard for anything other than their bottom line? Absolutely soul destroying it really is.

Itís amazing that people can get jailed for shop lifting but not for this. The laws really are designed for the rich.

I know someone who was one of the engineers on permanent call out for Southern Water, he didn't have a good word to say about them, basically they have bare boned all their maintenance and back up capacity, i.e.instead of having 3 huge pumps all maintained they would rely on just 1, if that failed it was often fingers crossed the other mothballed pumps would work. Regarding the recent electrical strike that caused raw sewage to enter the sea at Margate, he told me that the back up generators were only ever tested independent of the equipment they were meant to run and never tested under a load.

How anyone, even those who beleive in unfettered free market capitalism, can condone providing a monopoly supply of water to a private company is beyond me.

Thames Water has been sold on and on again as Hedge Funds, often foreign, exchange open access to the bank accounts of Londoners between themselves.

I would love to organize a London wide boycott. If we get a million households to pledge to not pay their water bills we could soon bring them to their knees and get our Water back under our own control.

The purpose of a company is to make divi's for the shareholders, don't be fooled by their claims of being eco friendly and talk of their values, it's just bollocks for public consumption. They'll do what they have to to make profit.

The model for water companies has always concerned me. Selling Water isn't exactly a risky business investing in them carries little risk either. In my view their profits should be capped by legislation due to the low risk. (I'm sure Adlers will be along shortly to tell me why this isn't possible).

Wrt to the fine, I've no clue whether this is a correct value for the offence or not but it should never be possible for a company to decide its cheaper to break the law than ensure they don't. Any further offences should take that into account.

OFWAT have over the years been responsible for repeatedly letting water companies get away with dumping sewage without fines. At least they have toughened up a bit.

Of course in the good old days of public ownership there was shit everywhere but no one knew.

When you get your dream of an independent London, England could sell you water at a vast profit.

If the independent Londoners didn't pay their bill they'd get cut off.

So they get fined 90 million and they simply put our bills up to pay it. Wonderful. They should fine the execs. That would make them sit up.
