Full back in the great Leeds side. England International played in the 1970 World Cup. One of the great full backs.

RIP Condolences to his family and friends

Another icon from my youth. RIP

Is it me or have Leeds lost quite a few past players in the last 19 months?

Excellent attacking full back. I remember him scoring the only goal of the LC final against Arsenal in 1972 ? . Not having a good run of late that old Leeds team. Anyway R.I.P TC.

Trevor Cherry and Jack Charlton died last year. Mick Bates, who played for Leeds in midfield nearly 200 times in the sixties and seventies died about three weeks ago.

Now sadly passed away...

From the 1972 FA Cup Winning Team v Arsenal:

Paul Madeley - 23-Jul-18

Billy Bremner (c) - 7-Dec-97

Jack Charlton - 10-Jul-20

Norman Hunter - 17-Apr-20

Peter Lorimer - 20-Mar-21

Mick Bates - 12-Jul-21

From 1968 League Cup final v Arsenal add:

Gary Sprake - 18-Oct-16

Terry Cooper - 31-Jul-21

I wonder how that compares to other teams from that era? Must have been something in the water at the training ground?

I think that team had a lot of heavy smokers. Its one of the things Clough made himself unpopular for by banning it.

1972 is 50 years ago nearly. Hardly surprising they are popping their cloggs.

Is there any data on life expectancy for professional athletes compared to the population?

I guess as a point of reference or for comparison I took a look at the Arsenal teams from those two finals.

Only one Arsenal player from the 1968 League Cup final has died (George Armstrong) and two from the 1972 FA Cup Final, one being Alan Ball.

Having said that, I do believe Leeds were an older team at the time... a sort of Palace 2020.

I've been re-reading Gareth Southgate's book, with Andy Woodman and ironically have
just read the bit, where Andy had left Palace and was basically about to start his goalkeeping career, in the lower leagues, with first stop, Exeter......managed by Terry Cooper.

Woody mentioned that Exeter were very skint and on the way home from away games, all the players used be given sandwiches, made by Cooper and his wife and he couldn't believe that a bloke, who had a great career and had played in the 1970 World Cup, would prepare food for the team.

Didn't Terry's son, Mark, become a Manager himself ? At Forest Green ?

RIP to another Leeds great.

I knew Jack Charlton liked the odd ciggie but I didn't know the rest of them were big into having a puff. A fair number of the Celtic team ( Lisbon Lions) of 1967, passed away at what would be called a relatively early age. They were known to be fond of the booze and the fact that they never had to put their hands in their pockets in Glasgow probably didn't help matters.
Terry Cooper (R.I.P) was an exciting full back. Unlike a lot of full backs of that era he would never have been described as cumbersome. He was a far better attacking full back than defending. I remember Jimmy Johnstone destroying him at Hampden (celtic v Leeds) and Jairzinho gave him the run around in Mexico but I also recall his winner for Leeds in the 68 League Cup final and his performances with the unlikeable but great Leeds team of the mid- sixties to mid 70's
