Summer 2022 Squad Refresh Pt 2

Carl reckons that PV has said he wants:

Keeper
RB
2 CM

in the summer.

Looking at the current squad and taking into account the above you would possibly think..

Most likely staying:

Butland, Matthews
Ward, Guehi, Andersen, Mitchell, Ferguson (pending fitness)
Hughes, Schlupp
Mateta, Edouard, Olise, Eze

Out of contract (according to Stigma’s list but a couple of doubts on Ayew & McArthur)

Clyne - would be expected to leave
Tomkins
Kelly - leave?
Jach?
Kouyate
McArthur
Ayew
Gallagher

Possible sales/departures or in WZ’s case a new deal…

Guaita - based on age and PV wanting a keeper
Zaha - last year of contract
Luka - last year of contract
Benteke - last year of contract
Reidewald - nowhere near the team

Academy possible promotions..

Adaramola
Rak-Sakyi
Banks
Plange
Others?

Academy becoming overage -some out of contract I believe?

Dreher
Hannam
Kirby
Spence

Looking at all that, we seem to have another busy summer, beyond the 4 mentioned by Carl.

Suggestions and discuss away…

Do you think Butland would stay if we brought in a new number one goalie?

It’s a good question, would probably depend on the level of player. He’s still only 28 (29 next month) so would think he has a good number of seasons ahead. He may believe he could compete for the jersey with a newcomer.

There is still a lot of money needed to be spent, I would hedge similar to this past summer so I would expect a few to leave to raise some funds, that may include Shlupp, Jario, Luka, VG/Butland and Wilf from the first team squad. I think we would keep McArthur and CK(if he would stay) and one of Tomkins or Kelly.

No room for sentiment .There are players who are out of contract and some of whom like ward kouyate Ayew Tomkins and Macca etc have served the club with distinction and we should wish them well but whom will only make a contribution in 2022 in emergency.
We need starters if we are to continue to improve and use our development players for emergencies.
We need to have a young fit squad in place by end of 2023 so as to spend monies on the stadium

It will be interesting whether we look to bring in any free agents in this summer.

There's a few interest names that might be gettable with PV although they would likely command high wages which may go against the wage structure we're trying to implement.

A few names that might be gettable:

Agree, but I think Dom F thought Macca and Ayew both have another year?

I don't know - he's got a year on his contract. Butland would have to think, at 28, that Vieira's had a look at him and doesn't think he's the right keeper for him. Otherwise why spend money bringing in a first choice?
Butland also has to think he can be a first team goalie for a premier league team that doesn't require a goalie who's good with his feet.

Tarkowski, Ginter, Zagadou and Stark are tasty centre back options. Nketiah/Brereton if we sell Benteke, and Johnstone if we need a new keeper.

Tolisso is so injury prone that he honestly could be a realistic signing, but it’s a matter of weighing up the talent vs the wages/injuries.

Same with Zagadou, a 6ft 6 monster centre back with real ability but with a poor injury record yet still only 22.

Yes seems to be contradiction as to their status. Be great to have both as back up. Don't see either starting come end of August window.

Another factor to consider is the club should work out Wilf’s future:

New contract
Keep for next season and let him leave on a free next summer
Take money for him this year but probably would be 20M ish

Agree, I think Ayew will be back up on the right, maybe an option to help shut up shop, and McArthur the back up to possibly Hughes as the starting central CM if that makes sense - ie not a DM or AM in the 3.

I think that the DM we will be looking at will be of a significantly higher calibre than those.

GK
With the keeper, Guaita is adequate but not getting any younger, and if he wants to return to Spain then fine. Butland is probably not good enough with the ball at his feet for the style we play to be first choice. Targets should be Raya at Brentford and Henderson at Man Utd. But I think Guaita will see out his contract, and we will revisit this next summer. Outcome: no new signings

LB
With Mitchell first choice, Adaramola promising and Ward and Ferguson who can cover (as well as Schlupp and Riedewald) we don't need a new left back.
Outcome: no new signings

RB
Ward has shown he is good enough until he is mentally and physically tired after a dozen games or so. He is great cover but shouldn't be first choice. Ferguson is still on the comeback trail from another 8 week lay-off - that's not a niggle. Clyne should still go. But we will need a new right back who is first choice. That then releases Ward and Ferguson to cover all across the back 4. I'd go for Djed Spence who is rumoured to have a release clause of £15m to finally give us some attacking threat and pace down the right. Outcome: one new first choice signing (£15m+)

CB
Tomkins and Kelly should all go. If we sign a right back it frees up Ward and Ferguson to be centre back cover. Riedewald is probably not going anywhere and is centre back cover too, having played there for Ajax. Although you'd want him at 6th choice. We will probably need to sign a young centre back unless Kouyate stays, but I hope he will. Outcome: no new signings

DM
If we keep Kouyate, then as well as McArthur and Hughes we have lots of cover in the position. Arguably we have the numbers but not the quality here. We desperately need someone with aerial ability, good on the ball and able to tackle. Outcome: one new first choice signing (£20m+)

Box-to-box CM
We have Hughes, McArthur and Schlupp as cover. I can see how some, including the manager, might feel we need a new signing here. However, I'd be happy to have McArthur in the XI if all else failed and it meant we addressed other areas. He has the nous and the engine to keep us competitive here. It's a little defensive because none of them are that great on the ball and we probably need a little more technical ability to be more creative. Someone who can slow the play down when necessary and carry us up the pitch when necessary too. I'd personally take the chance on Eze here. I think he could control the midfield for us. Of all our current centre mids he is the best at taking the ball on the half turn and retaining possession. After the rest of this season and a full pre-season he should be ready to play this position. He's not the best defensively but he's adequate, and he could definitely get us playing. Knowing there is someone of the calibre of McArthur waiting in the wings, especially against the Top 6, should give us the bravery to give him a go here. If Schlupp can be tried here why not Eze? Outcome: no new signings

Attacking CM
With the style we play you want someone fast, who can press the opposition, and then with the technical ability once we win the ball back. Gallagher was perfect for the role but will be going back to Chelsea. I don't think Eze is suited to this role, because he doesn't press hard enough, and any way I think he is better making late runs into the box from deeper and getting on the ball more to carry us forward. I think Olise could do the role, but he's needed further forward. I can see how Vieira might think we need a new signing here too but I think that there's a good chance we can get Gallagher back after a hiatus of a year. So I wouldn't sign anyone here, and I'd try someone who I think could be perfect for the role: Jordan Ayew. He is almost as good at pressing as Gallagher and he can tackle when he gets there. Plus he holds the ball well. He's brilliant at retaining possession, and I'd give him a chance here as soon as we are safe from relegation. I even think Zaha could do a job in this position, as cover. Think this is a position we will go hard at next summer with the likes of Gallagher. We will be fine for upcoming season though. Outcome: no new signings.

Left wing
Zaha might only have a year left on his contract, but he's still first choice for me. I think if we can start attacking down the right more, as we would if we signed an attacking right back, he will improve. But I wouldn't offer him a new contract. I doubt he would sign a new contract anyway as I sense he wants a new challenge. Schlupp is decent back-up, and Edouard is probably second choice. I'd revisit this in a year when Zaha has likely departed. Outcome: no new signings for now.

Right wing
Olise is first choice, and the likes of Ayew and Edouard can cover here. Outcome: no new signings

Centre forward
Benteke will have a year left in the summer. I wouldn't be offering him another contract, although he's a useful squad player. Mateta is raw but also a useful squad player. Edouard would be 4th choice here for me. I'd be looking to sign a new first choice here, someone with raw pace to press from the front, make runs in behind and stretch the opposition. That would then bring our wide forwards Zaha and Olise into play. I don't mind Nketiah and he'd be fine pressing from the front. But if Watford go down then we should go all out for Sarr and play him down the middle. Sure, he could also cover right wing, but I see him scoring plenty of goals from here and causing havoc, something the rest of our strikers are unable to do. Outcome: one new signing.

New contract for Kouyate, definitely. We need his experience and his ability to play multiple crucial positions for us. I'd also renew McArthur and Ayew if they are out of contract.

Tomkins, Clyne and Kelly are let go. Milivojevic can also go for £3m.

Bring in Spence (£15m), Sarr (£35m) and a new DM (£25m).

Wouldn't pay big wages for someone who is not going to start. So ideally someone who is going to be first choice is who we would sign on a free transfer. Would be happy to have Tolisso in our midfield if he wanted to come
