Crystal Ball: 2022-23 Ongoing thread

Welcome everyone to the new season of the Crystal Ball - a chance for you to show that you have your finger on the pulse of Palace results.

In case you forgot, here's how it works:
AT some point before a game, someone will start a new thread - you don't need to wait for us to do so; feel free to start your own. In the thread you post a prediction of the score of the Palace match. You can also predict the scorers, and the attendance. After the match, our tireless team tally the totals.

Points are scored for:
1. Correctly predicting the score of the match = 3 pts Additionally, if you correctly predict the score (not just the result), you will also get 1 point for each scorer you correctly predict.
2. Correctly predicting the result of the match but with the wrong score = 1 pt
3. Closest to predicting the attendance figure = 2 pts. Additionally, everyone whose prediction is within 100 gets 1 point (therefore 3 points if you were closest and within 100). If you are within 101-200 you will get a bonus point. (A bonus point only counts at the end of the season in the event of a tie).

Cup matches are based on the result of the match before any penalties. Therefore if the match goes to penalties then the match is judged to be a draw, regardless of who wins the shootout.

Please note the latest allowable time to post predictions is a minute prior to kick-off time. However, for an attendance punt or the scorers to be valid, the post must be made at least an hour before the kick off.

There are also pre-season and mid-season final position prediction threads and first and last six games Kiwicumulators that can score points. Furthermore, the Crystal Ball scoring team may, purely at their own discretion, award bonus points on other occasions - for example, honestly handing back points you didn't earn scored a bonus in the past.

I'm announcing a change in one of the rules from last year.

The Crystal Ball team has had a long discussion about the practice of awarding four points for a 0-0 draw. The logic when this rule was first introduced was that 0-0 couldn't get extra points for a scorer so they got a point - some said it was for predicted that the scorer was "No-one".

The problem with this logic is that if you correctly predict 1-1, you can get a maximum of two points for scorers but if you predict 2-3, you can get five points for scorers. Why is there compensation for lack of scorers to pick in one instance and not any other? What's more, if you pick 2-0, why don't you get a point for correctly picking that "no-one" would score for the losing team? Furthermore, why do you get a point for scorer in 0-0 when you literally haven't made a prediction? To get four points in a 1-0 game, you have to pick the correct score and say which of the players used in the match (including the unlikely event of an OG) made the decisive touch - a much harder task.

Therefore, we have decided that a 0-0 draw scores points the same as any other game: 3 pts for correct score and 1 point for correct result with an extra point for every correct scorer named (which in the case of 0-0 will mean no more points.)

Sorry but I am still confused - not hard at my age!
Why if I tip 1-1 and am correct without getting any of the scorers correct do I get 3 points but if I tip 0-0 and am correct without getting any of the scorers correct (as there are not any) do I get a bonus point, making 4 in total

You don't. You used to get a 4th point for 0-0 but we have done away with that rule.

If you predict the correct result but not the correct score, you get 1 point.
If you predict the correct score, you get 3 points and an extra point for every correct scorer named.

You're a bit late to the party G56. For several years now you have scored 4 for a 0-0 and 3 for a 1-1 but NOW, as a result of the change that you're highlighting, you score 3 for a 1-1 and 3 for a 0-0. We are changing it from the thing you don't want to the thing you want.

A disappointing result but all too predictable it seems. We finished last season with two tied at the top and we shall open this season the same: wrightchipvcfc and desperado both got 4 points - the former for correct result and being a mere 6 below the official attendance number of 25286; the latter for a close crowd punt and correct score. No-one who foresaw the score picked the scorers but a whole heap got close to the crowd. See if you can find yourself:

Don't think I have very often tipped 0-0 (certainly not correctly) so can't say I ever noticed

A first point of the season which many were not expecting. Therefore we do not have as many scorers this week.

CPFC85, hughff, Langers and Palace Yankee get four points. All four predicted the score. The first three all got a point for Wilf scoring and Palace Yankee for attendance. Three others predicted the score and two more that it would be a draw.

Most of the points awarded come from the attendance. Ian Hart was the closest with a punt of 52,985 which was only 15 over and therefore gets three points. In total 14 got within 100 and six get a bonus point.

It was good to see so much positivity in the predictions for Tuesday's match at Oxford. Not so long ago, I think there would have been a significant number of predictions of an Oxford win, but there were only a couple this time. Another outcome from having PV as our manager.

Overall, it was a good night, apart from it taking over an hour to get out of the car park.

There were also a couple of entries that correctly predicted the score and a scorer, but did not receive the additional point for the scorer. This was because of the timing of their posts, namely less than one hour before kick-off. The rule is: "However, for an attendance punt or the scorers to be valid, the post must be made at least an hour before the kick off."

I also had to ignore an entry that was made after kick-off.

As for the attendance, no-one was within 200 of the actual attendance and so the only points go to palacedan for being the nearest, 2 points, with a prediction that was a mere 260 above the official attendance.
