Liverpool (A) 15/08/22

Due to the joys of TV scheduling we now have to wait 10 days before our next fixture, away at Liverpool.

The last time we played them, Killian Phillips put in a masterclass in midfield, not sure he’ll play this time round, though.

Assuming Olise is back. Would prefer McArthur in that midfield.

Johnstone
Clyne - Andersen - Guehi - Mitchell
Doucoure - Hughes
Olise - Eze - Zaha
Mateta

Guiata, Ward, Richards, Riedewald, Milivojevic, Schlupp, Ayew, Ebiowei, Edouard

Got to bring in an actual CM for a player pretending to be one? I love Schluppy but he shouldn’t be starting CM in any premier league team.

I'd pick Ebiowei over Ayew. Or just about anyone for that matter.

Hughes in for Jeff

I don’t think we should be chopping and changing strikers every week.. doesn’t work.

You beat me to it although I wouldn't call him that. His first touch almost gifted Arsenal a goal and he offered nothing else for the remainder of the game, he didn't even get close enough to an Arsenal player to do his usual lazy foul. Bench player at best. I say go 3 at the back and keep it tight.

Think in midfield it will be;
Doucoure - Luka
Eze

At least for an hour

It does not appear at this stage that any of our injured players will be back for this one so I would go:

Johnstone
Ward - Andersen - Guehi - Mitchell
Luka - Doucoure
Schlupp
Ayew - Mateta - Zaha

Guaita, Clyne, Richards, Riedewald, Hughes, Eze, Ebiowei, Edouard, Plange.

We have to play two 6's in this rather than two 8's, especially when the potential 8's (Eze, Schlupp and Hughes will simply be over-run). We won't see much of the ball, so will need to break on those rare opportunities with pace behind Trent, hence Sclupp over Eze to start.

Mateta needs to start over Edouard with Johnstone and Ward coming in to add more aerial command. Liverpool are beasts with their set pieces.

Can see Richards (could maybe start instead of Luca in a 5 at the back) and Ebiowei getting further minutes and Eze for Schlupp at some point 2nd half too.

The problem was not starting our best striker last night

Mateta has to start

Bloody hell if some of you think Luka should be starting then we'd better give Kouyate that 2 year deal sharpish.

So you’d start Johnstone, who has been injured and never played for us, away, at Liverpool?
