Paddy McCarthy - Caretaker Manager
Thought it might be nice to have a thread for Paddy during his stint as caretaker manager.
It really is impossible to say how he'll fare in the role for however long he has it, but I have to say it was nice seeing him interviewed on Palace TV. Seems like a steady chap to have about the place and he does seem to have that fire behind his eyes so I hope he can make a positive impression on the players. he mentions that he likes to play aggressively out of possession so it'll be interesting to see if we try and press a bit higher up and take the game to the opposition in the final third a bit more. |

He at least understands the problems:
He noted: “We’ll try and implement an aggressive style out of possession in different ways. We’ll look to be aggressive when we don’t have the ball, and we’ll look to progress the ball up the pitch in possession. “That obviously said, we’ve only got a short amount of time to implement a few ideas, so I don’t want to flood the players with too much information. But ultimately, at this football club, part of our identity is that we’re aggressive out of possession, and certainly quick and fast in the attacking third. “We’ve got some excellent attacking players here and we want to get the ball up to them, in control, as many times as possible. I’m sure that up against any defenders, with their quality, they can be a real problem.”* To view the link you have to Register or Login |

Good encouraging interview.
Would hope he can motivate the team for a game far better than we have seen previously. He will probably have the respect of Wilf and Clyne at least having played together and I like how he says we want to be aggressive out of possession. Didn’t have a lot of hope going into the Arsenal regardless, so I’m looking forward to maybe seeing some passion at the Emirates. |

Given that Sunday is a "free hit", and we have an international break on the horizon, it’s all minimal risk for now and he has nothing to really lose. Not expected to get anything from the game anyway, but I’m very intrigued as to how he’ll do.
He is a leader, has done a brilliant job with the u21s, captained Wilf in the past and you never know how this stint could turn out. Might be the start of something great. Good luck Paddy. Perhaps the only thing that Palace fans can agree upon at this present moment is that we’re all rooting for you. Last edited by ms21; 17-03-2023 at 04:45 PM. |

Best of luck Paddy.
Already sussed the attacking aggression missing from last season. |

I hope you bring the luck of the Irish for the games you are in charge and get a few good results

However there is no excuses nowadays. With 5 subs, and the options we have from the bench there is no excuse for the front 3 and midfielders not to work their bollocks off and come off after 60 mins. Its the minimum we ask of them. And the reason why Ayew (for his many faults) has played every game this season. |

The 5 sub rule will certainly help. McArthur and Hughes being back would certainly help the said game plan, even from the bench. It’s so important to have a strong midfield base when operating a high aggressive pressing game, and ultimately Schlupp and Eze in the middle just won’t carry out that plan (which I hope he recognises! ![]() |

I hope he's great, but if he is great and we get the three of four wins we need, I hope we don't get over excited and give him the job permanently (though it would be extremely Palace if we did).

Are you sure it's a fitness thing, rather than a tactical/don't commit too many forward thing as per PV's wishes?

If he’s great. And it’s a big if. Don’t know why we wouldn’t give it to him on a permanent basis. Wouldn’t be the first or last successful academy manager to graduate to the first team and do well. A certain Pep Guardiola took that precise route into management. No, we’re not Barcelona, but it’s all relative.

An ideal solution for me would be that he comes in and does a solid enough job to the end of the season. At that point he is kept on as a key part of the 1st team coaching set-up for the whomever becomes the permanent manager. That said, usually new managers like to bring in their own assistants etc.

Me too.
Although he’ll have to have a word with Doucoure before he turns into a homicidal manic.

If we manage to nick a few wins and draws then absolutely not. If he gets us dominating games, scoring goals and defensively solid I'm not too sure why we wouldn't give it to him. |
