Results tracker compared to last season

A few people seemed to find the one I did last season an interesting discussion point/ measure of how the season was going, so I thought I'd repeat it.

Obviously we finished comfortably away from safety in a good 11th position (despite being 12th for what felt like forever). So this is not in any way a relegation avoidance calculator.

As a reminder, last season we ended up with 45 points.

The final column will indicate if we are doing better in the like for like results (indicating with + to show if we've picked up more points in the corresponding fixtures so far or a - if we've picked up fewer. If the last column says 0, it signifies we have exactly the same number of the points as last season from the equivalent games so far.

For this seasons comparison I will use:
Burnley for Leicester
Sheffield United for Leeds
Luton for Southampton

Please point out any mistakes... I'll probably make some at some point!

Thanks for doing this it kind of ( for me) shows that we lost against the big clubs as expected but also managed draws too, which is a result.

Yes the key were not carving a win against Forest,Burnley & Everton.

But there was more to it than that - was it Pat wanting better players in Jan & being unhappy with what was given ? Did the changing room not like his approach?

Yes we struggled at a point of looking like relegation contenders - yet we played bigger clubs & got draws !

So why ( don’t shoot me) did Pat have to go ?

Yet the past is the past - let’s see against your chart how Roy compares

There's quite a run of games early on where we could get a positive score on the board

Pat went because the players stopped running for him and we weren’t prepared to pay a fee for lerma knowing we could get him on a free. Had we signed him and importantly played him alongside Doucoure January onwards I have little doubt PV would have lost his job and finished much higher than we did

Yup. 6 or 7 from the first 4 is what i would have targeted for and we got 7 last season. Lot depends on this weekend.

Then there is a run of 8 games where we achieved just 4 points last season. Trying to be realistic i would be targeting double figures this season so could be +6 at the end of November.

Sorry, just to clarify that last bit - did you actually mean that as written Vieira would still have been sacked, but with Lerma in we would have finished higher? Or did you mean that in fact we would have kept him on?

If the latter then that's interesting insight if it has come from informed sources, which you do normally seem to have.

Hi Eddie, I've been keeping records exactly like this for the last seven seasons. It's also interesting to see the difference in goal difference between the seasons (just saying).

I'll keep an eye on your record and cross check with mine. One of us should be right

Thanks Bipe. To be clear (my opinion ) had we bought lerma early January and played him alongside Doucoure viera wouldn’t have lost his job because we would have finished higher. We didn’t , players stopped running (Everton away) friction , Derry leaving, experienced player unrest , next bit (in the know) viera reluctantly had to go.
Anyways back to the tracker which I singularly at a glance find the best way of comparing to see what progress if any we are making.
Positive goal difference, points tally and league position obviously being others.
Think we might find even more disparity between top, middle and bottom ( 3 distinctive leagues) as season progresses.

Respect that opinion but it was not results that led to Vieria going. We actually were doing ok in that run of difficult games. It was the performances, the training and the backroom that were the problem. As you say the players were not running, but that was accepted by Vieira in the way he wanted to play. He didn't want loud vocal voices like Derry trying to get more out of the players in a different style. It will be interesting to see how he gets on at STrasbourg this year and next.

I think he was going to go anyway and the board were unsure on him from his first season.

I've sort of done it in my head at times before, but last season as our fixture list was so lopsided with a very difficult set of fixtures, then easier ones and then again in the 2nd half of the season, it made it feel more relevant/ useful than ever to really understand how our season was going.

Probably not as bad as last season but our run of Liverpool at home to Chelsea at home is a tough run.

Yep, that is a very tough run of games, you're right. Don't think I'd spotted that.

Burnley were in Championship . Vieira had to go because of our dismal form ( for such a long period )and we lost our way . It is strange , up until the Forest game our points total was very good . We did have some poor performances but on the whole i felt the effort was there but we just lost all direction .

Apologies if I raised the PV discussion didn’t really want to dwell on past but Eddie’s list kinda of re triggered the Results discussion for me.Ie we didn’t do too bad against the big teams & kind of felt for Pat as if he had been given x2 good players in Jan he may have carved more wins.Anyways time to look fwd & one hopes we get them x2 this window OR we expect the same outcome this season tbh - Steve must see that Roy will struggle otherwise like Pat did

Hah

I still think it was a bit rude not to finish 12th are being there all last season.

But I think we are likely to be in a battle for 11th-14th

In my head I currently guess at:

1: Man City

2-10 (not in any specific order):
Arsenal, Liverpool, United, Chelsea, Spurs, Newcastle, Villa, Brighton, West Ham

11th-14th (not in any specific order): Palace, Forest, Fulham, Brentford

15th-20th (not in any specific order):
Bournemouth, Everton, Wolves, Luton, Sheffield United, Burnley

I'm rubbish at predictions though. So I'm sure I'll be very wrong.
