According to my reading of the rules the kick should have been retaken.

Unquestionably. And 2 seconds after that frame, Ward and Andersen are loudly protesting to the ref. But he wasn't interested.

Morning all - I'm a Villa fan and was at the game. I actually didn't celebrate when we scored having seen Diaby go into the area; however, i think what saved him was that rather than staying there he tried to get back out and was doing so when the penalty was struck. Can understand why the ref allowed it (and don't forget it would have been checked although I doubt you had much trust in the VAR response). However, I wouldn't have been surprised to see it retaken.

If the outcome wasn't affected then no.
So if the keeper steps off the line and it goes in no retake, if he saves it, retake. If the villa encroacher scores from the save, it doesn't count (although I'm not sure it would be a retake in that circumstance, I don't think it would be), if it is saved and cleared by an encroaching defender, it's a retake. Darren England may be a **** but this is sad and desperate. Richards made a tackle attempt but no way did he not take the striker down in doing so, and he clipped his knee before the ball was touched too. Would it have been a foul in the centre circle? Probably not, but those are 99% given, at home, in the PL. Missed chances cost us and that's all there is to it.

From what I’ve seen on Twitter, there’s a variation in the rules between the Premier League and the FA.
The Premier League says that the encroachment needs to have a material impact on the outcome of the kick. But the FA says that any encroachment results in referee action. I could be totally wrong but that’s what I’ve taken away from people debating it elsewhere. |

I would like clarification on this rule change as well. Surely you can't encroach in the box as an attacker. If you could they could all go running in front of the keeper and putting them off... as long ad you don't touch it goal stands.

Why even stand outside the box at all in that case? If it comes down to whether you're touching the ball then you could make it very difficult for the keeper to work out who is even taking it.

Everyone bar the keeper and the penalty-taker has to be 10 yards from the ball until it is struck. That is the point of the arc on the penalty area. Unless this has changed.

Keeper has to be 12 yards away, on his line

Mentioned before, bur recall the Forest game 20 years ago?
3-0 down at home and we get back to 3-2 Keeper is then sent off for bring down Fan Fan scores the penalty Ref orders a re take due to encroachment (which had zero impact on the outcome) and Dave Beasant, IIRC who had been subbed on saves the retake We lose 3-2

Technically the Goalkeeper could be closer than 12 Yards, the specific rule is:
"the defending goalkeeper must have at least part of one foot touching, in line with, or behind, the goal line." So providing that one foot is touching etc. the line he could be leaning/ready to jump in a direction which would bring them closer than 12 Yards.

It made no impact on the goal. No way was Johnstone distracted.

Yep, it's irrelevant to that goal but it would be good to know the norm. Feels like it probably has to be enforced strictly, because otherwise teams are going to push the interpretation to maximum.

The rule should be black and white. No encroachment. Otherwise you get in to "did it distract the keeper" debate it's open to refs getting it wrong. I have no issue with the goal itself but should be made clear going forwards
