'Baby On Board' Stickers
Kirsty Young (on Room 101) went on a fabulous rant about these and the sad people who display them in their car.
What, she asked, are they trying to say? That people who would normally crash into them should stop and consider? That a baby's safety is more important than anyone else's? That the owner is liable to make all sorts of driving errors because they are too busy saying 'coochy coo'? She concluded - rightly imo - that what people are really doing is displaying some form of sad 'fertility symbol' : a way of announcing "I may look like a sad plonker but someone has had sex with me and my gonads still function". If I'm wrong, would anyone who has such a sticker care to provide a better explanation?

I thought this was going to be another thread about the joys of an ocean liner holiday.
I remember years ago seeing a motor cycle messenger with a "Baby in Box"sticker on the back of his bike.

I think the message is more "don't worry if you can see a child seat, the driver is no likely to stop the traffic flow in order to slap their child as it is still too young".

I don't have one and have similar views to Ms Young. However, I once heard it explained that the purpose of these signs is to alert emergency services in the event of an accident that there is a child in the vehicle and that it may have been thrown clear.
Now this would be fine if the people who used these signs removed them from the car when there was no child on board and had an equivalent number of signs for each child on board. And, as we have tragically heard, adults can also be ejected in an accident so what we should actually have is an indicator, like that you use to tell the milkman how many pints of milk you want, saying how many people are on board at the start of each journey. |

Not really for me either, I am afraid.
I'll be interested to read a defence of them.

Although I don't use them, I see no problem with them. Certainly nothing I would have a rant about anyway, far more worse/annoying things in the world.

When I was in the Ambulance Service and went to RTA's we were advised to ensure if the sticker was showing that we made all possible attempts to find the baby. I dread to think howe many lives were lost looking for a non-existent baby because the parents could not be bothered removing them.(The stickers not the babies)

I see these signs as a "comfort Blanket", The displayers doing everything they can to make sure their prodigy dont get hit, However futile the attempt at safety.

That emergency service story really is tenuous.

Very easy to take the p1ss but maybe somewhere at some time it has got someone to think which may have saved one life.
You could use the same theory to apply to speed limits. Why do we need rules because nobody would deliberately endanger themselves and others!!! |

Golf Boy makes a good point. Why display speed signs if people don;t pay attention (Maz take note). If in just one instance out of a hundred road accidents displaying the sticker saved a baby's life then surely it has got to make sense hasn't it?

I can't believe that people have died because the emergency services were too busy looking for a baby.

Maybe they should change it to "Baby in Vacinity".

Do you have any evidence that these signs are life-saving? And if so shouldn't you display one for each baby, in case one gets lost in the glove box? I have never seen more than one sticker in a car : which rather suggests you are desperately ferreting around for excuses - do YOU have one? (Emptied P.)

I think the key word here is "sticker"....it is glued on to the car...ie not easily removable.
We don't use one, but I was always lead to believe it was for emergency services.....got no problem with it. There are other things to worry about such as when will I next get a decent nights sleep!
